evelyn movie review by Jim Eadon
His young daughter, Evelyn, is doted on, the favourite of both dad and of the movie, is locked up in a nunnery.
Evelyn's fate is in the hands of a squad of beastly nuns, cold as penguins, lead by the wickedly brutal Bridget.
Evelyn is not particularly deep, but it is that increasingly rare modern movie aimed at people with a mind and humanity, rather than the MTV droids, which is why I enjoyed it all the more.

Evelyn is a touching drama set in Ireland in 1953 about a man who wants nothing more than to be present in his children's lives.
Evelyn has her father's spunk along with a deep streak of independence.
In an audio commentary, actor/director Pierce Brosnan and producer Beau St. Clair reflect on the six years it took to get the film made and why it was worth the time and effort; in a second audio commentary, director Bruce Beresford praises the actors and their work in the film.

 YMA Movie Review - Evelyn
Evelyn is an absorbing, if somewhat emotive drama which deals with the unjust family law that existed in Ireland in the 1950s, when the movie was set.
This movie is not recommended for children under the age of 8, due to the level of violence and scariness.
Evelyn speaks out against Sister Bridget for hitting the child whereupon she flies into a rage, drags Evelyn out of the class and hits her violently across the face several times for daring to question her authority.

 Evelyn : Movie Review
His participation in Bruce Beresford's Evelyn allows him to slip out of the role that has lately been his bread-and-butter, and get back to the kinds of things he once did.
Evelyn is a shamelessly uplifting motion picture that attains its feel-good status by forging a deep emotional connection between the undertrodden protagonist and the audience.
Evelyn bears the "based on a true story" label, but, considering the flow of the narrative, my guess is that only the bare-bones facts remain.

Coming from a broken home in Ireland, Brosnan, from the age of six to eleven, was educated in a Catholic boys' school run by strict disciplinarians the Christian Brothers.
Evelyn is an emotional and uplifting story that is as relevant today as it was fifty years ago.

Evelyn - Rotten Tomatoes   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
The movie has a script (by Paul Pender) made of wood, and it’s relentlessly folksy, a procession of stagy set pieces stacked with binary oppositions.
Evelyn may be based on a true and historically significant story, but the filmmakers have made every effort to disguise it as an unimaginative screenwriter's invention.
Evelyn may be a weightless picture, but it's hardly torture to sit through.

EVELYN, by Bruce Beresford (DRIVING MISS DAISY), is an unabashedly schmaltzy and thoroughly enjoyable true story about a legal case that made Irish legal history in the early 1950s.
The big trial conclusion is the movie at its best as screenwriter Paul Pender gets more mileage than you'd ever believe from the single word "however." I think I will forever remember this movie when I heard that word.

Sister Brigid (Andrea Irvine) is the wicked nun who is Evelyn's nemesis in the orphanage, but the good heart of Sister Felicity (Karen Ardiff), who honestly loves the children in her care, is a balanced counterpoint to the mean doings of "Frigid" Brigid (as the kids in the orphanage call her).
"Evelyn" is a little movie and probably won't wow them at the box office, but it is a fit film for the holidays with its uplifting tale of one man who fights back against the injustice of the system and wins the custody of his children.
"Evelyn" is one of those 'based on a true story' uplifting underdog tales that threatens to drown the audience in treacle, but screenwriter Paul Pender and director Beresford offset the kiddies' plight with enough matey jockeying jocularity among the male cast to retain an even keel.

Beresford tries to interject various moments of magic into the film, including an aside in which Evelyn can see her dead grandfather’s presence in the twinkily rays of the sun.
I understand that the film is called “Evelyn,” but there is a bigger story here than just a little girl, with Beresford keeping the film from significance by not keeping an eye on all the dangling subplots.
“Evelyn” has an amiability that is hard to resist, even though the filmmakers do their best to muck up the purity of heart on display here.

Evelyn (2002) Movie Review by Mark Dujsik at The Movie Insider
Meanwhile, he is tries to hatch plans to free his children, daughter Evelyn (Sophie Vavasseur) and her two brothers (whose names are mentioned once and are therefore unimportant; I guess two boys don’t tug at the heartstrings quite like a little girl).
The courtroom scenes are interesting and idea-heavy (at least when considering the rest of the movie), so of course, they’re undermined by the convention that everyone in the courtroom must cheer and boo and hiss and gasp when a new revelation is made.
But this is also a movie in which Henry tells his granddaughter that beams of sunlight are angel rays, and thereafter, whenever a member of the family is in some sort of crisis, he or she is bathed in subtle, angelic backlighting.

 Evelyn - Movie Review
The most celebrated child custody battle in Irish history is the subject of "Evelyn," a moving but uninspired feel-good drama in which Pierce Brosnan stretches his anti-Bond acting muscles as a struggling carpenter and painter desperately fighting church and state to get his three button-cute kids out of foster care.
As the opening act of the movie unfolds, Doyle's beloved young children -- two boys and a sweet little girl whose name begot the film's title -- are dragged off to strict orphanage schools run by tyrannical nuns.
"Evelyn" may be based on fact and its star does get his act together before long, but the script is the stuff of Screenwriting 101.

"Evelyn" ~~ a Movie Review by the Filmiliar Cineaste
It just goes to prove that any formula for success is elusive and thinking you have a movie with the same elements that proved so effective in the past would garner a repeat.
Based on a real incident in Irish jurisprudence, the story outlines the case of a father, two sons, a daughter by the name of Evelyn, and a wife who abandons the lot.
The most egregious of this is the melodramatic appearance of the preposterous "angel rays" -- just when little Evelyn is in the witness box and in need of a little celestial confidence building.

Evelyn, titled after his daughter who is taken away from him by the courts after his wife abandons them (his two sons are also taken, though the movie for some reason pays little attention to them), is a moderately effective drama that basically relies on the goodness of Brosnan.
Brosnan is good, the story is good, and I really liked the title character (Sophie Vavasseur), but the movie does suffer from some not-so-good performances (Julianna Margulies is nothing to scream about here) and cheesy antics (the reporter outside the courtroom and the rather clichéd ending).
Evelyn isn't terrific, but it deserves more recognition than it was given, and a wider release than what United Artists decided to do.
