 St. Evelyn Waugh
Waugh was also a world-class eccentric, and it is to this dimension of his personality that many commentators have been drawn in the course of reviewing Martin Stannard's work.
Waugh was essentially a monist in his vision of Church, culture, and state, and he would have regarded Murray's call for Catholic participation in the definition of a "public philosophy" capable of sustaining genuine pluralism as something of a low aim, at best.
Waugh was, for example, the editor of the British edition of Thomas Merton's Seven Storey Mountain, and during his visits to the U.S. in the late 1940s he was deeply moved by the monastic renaissance then flourishing.

Martin paces in pain through the long nights and during the days he is immersed in the river, but at times it seems for all of us that there is no solid ground.
Martin Strel is a remarkable man, an iron man, and his place in the record books was hard fought and well deserved.
Ultimately, they learn that they are to form a phalanx around Martin, one on either side of him and one to the front or to the rear; but there isn't room for that yet and everything is happening way too fast.

The Roberta Martin Singers began recording in the forties on the Apollo label, but the bulk of their music was issued by Savoy from the mid -fifties to the mid-sixties.
Martin's most visible legacy -the Roberta Martin Singers - introduced a dynamic new sound to gospel, combining male and female voices for the first time in striking contrast to the traditional all male and all-female gospel quartets and groups of the twenties and thirties.

Evelyn Lear - The Art of the Recital (1 CD)
Evelyn even refused to have me billed as "pianist" or "accompanist" on any concert programs; she always insisted on "in collaboration with Martin Katz", and in her case, the expression was totally appropriate.
Evelyn and I only made one "commercial" recording together during all that time, and that was devoted entirely to popular music, songs from shows, etc. There was no way that others could fully understand Evelyn's way with an artsong or the nature of our partnership.
Evelyn plays the piano fairly well (never a comfortable fact for an accompanist like me to know) and could thus easily empathize with technical and pianistic necessities in the keyboard part of any piece we were doing.
