Topic: Even Dozen Jug Band

Jug band - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Though a true jug band must have a jug player, some people casually use the term jug band when referring to skiffle bands, spasm bands and juke (or jook) bands (see juke joint), which are other kinds of ensembles that incorporate a random mix of traditional and home-made instruments.
Instruments are often improvised, and in the early days of jug band music, guitar and mandolins were sometimes made from the necks of discarded guitars fastened to large gourds.
The eponymous jug is just that: a jug (usually made of glass or stoneware) played by buzzing the lips into the mouth of the jug, from about an inch away.

First International Jug Band Festival   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Jug band music originated almost a century ago as a pre-fusion of jazz and blues featuring highly affordable musical instruments like spoons and washboards, kazoos, washtub basses and musical saws, and whiskey jugs which can be used (when empty) to create a resonant fuzz bass line.
Jug band music had a great revival in the folk music boom of the sixties with John Sebastian and the Lovin' Spoonful, the Jim Kweskin Jug Band, the Even Dozen Jug Band, Dave van Ronk and the Ragtime Jug Stompers, and many more.
Jug bands have become an international phenomena - annual jug band "battles" have been held in various Minnesota cities for almost 20 years, there has been a jug band festival in Yokohama (Japan) for at least two years, there are at least six jug bands in Australia...Now it's Northern California's turn.

 The Even Dozen Jug Band
One of the exceptions to this commonplace phenomenon is the Even Dozen Jug Band.
The Even Dozen Jug Band was formed by Stefan Grossman and the old-timey guitarist Peter Siegel.
I first heard the Even Dozen Jug Band about a month ago, and although their fine reputation had preceded them, I was still quite unprepared for the tremendous blend of musicianship and good fun that they presented in concert.

The Even Dozen Jug Band was less a band than a short-lived project thrown together at the height of the jug band craze in 1964 toward the end of the American Folk Revival.
Like other jug bands of the era, the Even Dozen Jug Band loosely based their style on jug band music from the 1920s (the Memphis Jug Band and Cannon's Jug Stompers) and relied on unusual instruments like kazoos, jugs, and washboards.
The Even Dozen Jug Band eventually fell apart when the members--many who were very young--chose staying in school over hitting the road to promote the group.

Shortly after the Kweskin Jug Band performed on the nationally-aired Steve Allen Show, on March 4, 1964, Lyman left the band and was replaced by banjo wiz Bill Keith, who had just left a gig with Bill Monroe's Bluegrass Boys.
The Kweskin Jug Band continued to bring their unique style of folk music to a national audience, appearing on The Roger Miller Show and The Al Hirt Show.
Just when it looked as though the Kweskin Jug Band was going to become commercially successful, Kweskin, who had moved into Lyman's commune in Fort Hill, a run down section of Boston, shaved off his trademark mustache and announced that he was breaking up the group.

I've always had the impression that the band was actually more Rowan's baby that Grisman's, especially since the the muddled feel of these discs seems so similar to the later pop-rock efforts of the Rowan Brothers in the early '70s.
Yet even while dancing on the brink, Grisman and his gang remain fully in control, and this album is still very much in keeping with the gypsy swing tradition of Stephane Grappelli and Django Rinehardt; the Quintet's jazz chops are pretty unassailable, and the melodies are thrillingly strong.

Yet the Even Dozen Jug Band was not so much a serious bid at a music career as a fun, loose conglomeration of good friends, with a revolving cast that usually numbered between five and ten at their jams.
The Even Dozen Jug Band was the first Elektra album produced by Paul Rothchild, who had previously worked on folk recordings for Prestige, and would go on to be Elektra's most successful producer on records by Fred Neil, Tim Buckley, Phil Ochs, Judy Collins, Love, Paul Butterfield, and the Doors.
Yet half the members were soon making music their career, with success far exceeding that of the Even Dozen Jug Band, and extending far beyond the parameters of jug band music, into all areas of rock, pop, and folk.
