Topic: Even Serpents Shine

  Rise & Shine On-Line Magazine
God, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 2:5-6).
I imagine they even picked up some of the idly curious on the way (there probably was never a whole lot going on in Bethany).
Even my wife, who I'm sure God put in my life to keep me from being a total maniac, has questioned the tone (at least) of the past two articles.

In Central America, the WINGED SERPENT god has a human head on the body of a snake with wings as well, showing that these symbols are universal.
The serpent represented the life-giver and the body moving up and down represented the immortality of the soul.
The WINGED SERPENT has many forms in the art of Central America at times it was shown with a man’s head, or even a man’s face inside the mouth of a serpent.

In a similar fashion to the New York Dolls in the USA, they have often been cited as an obvious influence on generations of bands that followed, but were rarely appreciated in their own lifetime.
With an image that was equal parts glamour (a singer with a Keith Richards hairstyle and a prediliction for leopardskin clothing) and druggy cool (wasted looks and a Lou Reed styled vocal delivery), the Only Ones were darlings of the music press, and their self-titled debut album was well received by critics as a result.
'Even Serpents Shine' followed with equally impressive songwriting, but internal arguments and a fall-out with their record label hindered it's commercial progress.

The Bret Tobias/Bigger Lovers Interview: Fufkin.com: David Fufkin: September, 2002
A band that tours and that can actually pull it off live, The Bigger Lovers are a shining example of great songs, great recordings and great live performances.
Ironically, I think the last record,...Worrying, had a more of a live sort of feel to it even though it was kind of Frankenstein-ed together and everything was recorded pretty much in isolation.
Even now, it's out of print which is a drag.

First single 'Lovers Of Today' on their own Vengeance label as Peter and the Pets led to CBS contract; 'Another Girl Another Planet' was a cult hit.
LPs The Only Ones '78 and Even Serpents Shine '79 showcased Perrett's tortured, Lou Reed-style vocals; never punks, they derived much from USA glam-rock.
Compilation Special View was issued in USA, where Baby's Got A Gun '80 was their most successful album (top 40 LP), but the writing was on the wall with last-chance single 'Fools', a Perrett duet with Penetration vocalist Pauline Murray on an untypical C&W- flavoured tune.

Even Serpents Shine varies little from its predecessor and contains some captivating material, but lacks anything as great as "Another Girl, Another Planet." Special View picks tracks off both albums and adds the two sides of the band's self-released 1977 debut single for an introductory lesson in the Only Ones' early oeuvre.
Although finally realizing simultaneous release in the US and the UK with the Colin Thurston-produced Baby's Got a Gun, the Only Ones' commercial success was still too slight to sustain them, and they called it quits in 1981.
The songs on Live predate the CBS albums; it shows the band to have been firmly in musical control even at that early juncture.

Front man Perrett, with his leopard-skin jacket and Lou Reed drawl, won considerable music press attention and the group's self-titled debut album was very well received.
A second self-produced collection, Even Serpents Shine, was also distinctive, but internal group friction and disagreements with their record company hampered their progress.
Producer Colin Thurston took control of Baby's Got A Gun, which included a guest appearance by Pauline Murray, but the album lacked the punch of their earlier work.

The Only Ones were immortalized by the single "Another Girl, Another Planet", but this compilation of the best moments from the band's first two British albums ("The Only Ones" and "Even Serpents Shine") proved they were far more than one hit wonders.
Peter Perrett's vocals were saturated with a weird,...charisma, lacking in neither melody nor emotion even though he sounded like the sulky, pockmarked kid contemplating suicide in the back corner of the classroom.
The band behind him was made up of (if you'll excuse the term) professional musicians - stubborn old musos with enough chops and experience to defiantly inject drama and subtlety into the simple three-chord-bamalama of late 70's punk.

OK, so retrospective collections may not be easy to compile, and every anthology attracts its share of whingers who bemoan the exclusion of certain tracks, but it's beyond me how brilliant songs like 'Breaking Down', 'City of Fun' and 'Language Problem' didn't make the CD.
Personally, I'd recommend people snatch up the self-titled first album and 'Even Serpents Shine'.
It may work out more costly than buying this cheaper 'best of..' but you'll be getting a fuller and more pleasurable Only Ones experience...also, you really don't need some of the tracks at towards the end of this offering.

Jungle Records - THE ONLY ONES   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
A promising independent 7" single 'Lovers Of Today' on their own Vengeance label in 1977 led to the group being signed by CBS Records, who released their classic 'Another Girl, Another Planet'.
They recorded three albums with CBS: 'The Only Ones' (1978), 'Even Serpents Shine' (1979) and 'Baby's Got A Gun' (1980), but although they achieved good chart positions a combination of escalating studio budgets and rumours of heavy drug problems led to them eventually being dropped by the major.
The band won considerable music press attention and have frequently been hailed as a much underrated and influential group.
