Republican in politics, The Evening Herald was given life by two men who were among the most distinguished journalists and politicians of their time.
The Evening Herald was not the first daily newspaper published in Ottawa; that honor belongs to The Republican, which went daily in 1879.
Even as the Harris chain grew with the purchases of The Hutchinson News, The Hawk Eye at Burlington, Iowa, and the Salina Journal, Sidney remained editor and publisher of The Herald until his death in 1955.

Evening Press - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Its principal competitor was the Evening Herald, which had been operating in Dublin as the one of only two evening papers since the demise of the Evening Telegraph in 1924.
The Evening Press was an instant success, and contributed to the financial losses and eventual closure of the Evening Mail in 1962.
The poor performance of The Irish Press, particularly after its unsuccessful relaunch in 1988, was a severe drain on the whole Irish Press Group, and probably damaged the Evening Press brand, although it continued to perform better in the evening newspaper market than its sister paper did in the morning market.

The SOC based its decision to close Southway on two major issues: that the £396,000 should be spent in Southway to help the community to recover from losing their school, and that Sir John Hunt College attain an intake of 210 new pupils every year for the next five years to make this expansion viable.
Parents will choose to send their children to feeder schools in other areas - even if it means moving to other parts of Plymouth - if they don't want their children to go to Sir John Hunt; therefore primary school figures will fall in Southway and they could face closure also.
The Evening Herald report of April 20 headlined 'Schools cash blow' comes as no surprise to those who have followed the less-than-straightforward 'consultation' process instigated by Plymouth City Council in order to close down secondary provision at Southway.
