  Evening Standard - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Evening Standard is a British tabloid newspaper published and sold in London and surrounding areas of southeast England.
The Star merged with the Evening News in 1960, and the two remaining papers were great rivals until they shared ownership in the 1980s.
In 1980, the Evening News was incorporated into the Evening Standard, leaving London with one single evening paper.

A survey of London businesses, including caterers, security firms, hotels and taxis, revealed most claimed road tolls had led to a slump in their profits.
The London Chamber of Commerce found 74 per cent of firms said their takings were down by between ten and 15 per cent - and nearly 60 per cent of these said that the fall was either "all" or "mostly" due to the congestion charge.
But Edinburgh transport leader, Councillor Andrew Burns, said he was surprised at the London Chamber of Commerce findings, and quoted another recent survey, by business organisation London First, which showed three per cent of firms thought congestion charging had not worked.

News International's paper will break the monopoly on London evening titles held since 1980 by the Evening Standard, published by Associated Newspapers, which also publishes the mass-circulation Daily Mail.
Murdoch's thelondonpaper is the first new title to be launched by his News International group, which owns The Sun and The Times and their Sunday sister newspapers, News of the World and The Sunday Times.

Derek Turner, the consultant responsible for implementing London Mayor Ken Livingstone’s £5-a-day scheme for the centre of London, said difficulties in predicting the impact of such traffic schemes made it impossible for people to make an informed choice before charges were put into practice.
