  Pastyme - Evensong
Prior to the Reformation, Evensong was a common English name for the office of Vespers, one of the eight Canonical Hours of the divine office of the Roman Catholic church.
Evensong, like all forms of liturgical worship, has elements of drama and ritual that nourish the spiritual life of the congregants.
Evensong is traditionally mostly sung by a choir, with the full congregation participating in the intoning of the Creed, the Lord=s Prayer, and hymns.

Evensong Explained, by W.K. Lowther Clarke
EVENSONG is a popular service in the true sense of the term "popular." Especially when the psalms and lessons have a clear and appropriate message, it appeals to the people in a wonderful way, refreshing the soul and informing the mind.
In a sense this is true, but the offices from which our modern services are derived were used by other priests than those in monasteries, and in a simpler form by pious layfolk in their private devotions.
CRANMER'S WORK.—We have seen that Matins and Evensong, though dating from the Reformation in their present form, are yet derived from services which go back to the very first age of the Church, and even beyond that to the Jewish Synagogue.

Considered simply as Evening Prayer set to music, Evensong has a dual appeal in our time and place, attracting those to whom Evening Prayer is a cherished memory as well as those for whom Evensong is an entirely new form of worship.
The roots of Evensong are in the daily, daylong devotions of medieval religious communities.
While Evensong is still sung daily in cathedrals throughout the Anglican Communion, younger members of churches in our diocese may not have had many chances to enjoy the service.

Cathedral Choral Evensong is essentially a service of reflection - of leaving oneself open that God may speak to us through the psalms and readings and canticles which are the core of the service.
Cathedrals with a great choral tradition draw upon a rich inheritance of music, much of it sung by the choir alone.
In the Anglican tradition this music finds its natural setting in the ancient office of Evensong, a combination of the medieval offices of Vespers and Compline found in the Book of Common Prayer.

When the prayers are set to music and sung, either by the congregation, or on the behalf of the congregation by the choir, it is called 'Evening Song,' or 'Evensong' in Elizabethan English.
Composers from Cranmer's time to the present have given themselves to the composition of such settings, and these have been part of the church's continuous, daily offering of prayers ever since.
And, keeping in mind the great benefit of meditation and reflection to the development of our personal spirituality, it is choir's hope that the congregation will join wholeheartedly in the spirit of the service, such that our supplications and sacrifices be offered vicariously on behalf of 'all saints here present.'
