Event - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Individuals define an event's significance subjectively; people actively and retroactively compartmentalize their lives and history in terms of epochs delimited by events considered to be significant.
In Physics and in Science in general, an event may be contrasted with a process, which occurs across intervals, not just at a point on a timeline.
In special relativity (and general relativity), an event is a point in the spacetime continuum, i.e.

We can say that the historian describes the event in a way enjoined upon him or her by the evidence, but—as we said before—the records from the past are silent and do not insist on any particular reading.

Probability theory - LearnThis.Info Enclyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Probabilities are assigned to events according to the probability axioms.
The probability that an event occurs given the known occurrence of an event is the conditional probability of given ; its numerical value is (as long as is nonzero).
Some statisticians will assign probabilities only to events that they think of as random, according to their relative frequencies of occurrence, or to subsets of populations as proportions of the whole; those are frequentists.

 Miracles
In the case of extraordinary events that are well attested to and for which we have suitable experiential analogies, Hume thinks that the most we are justified in believing is that the event did occur — not that the event is a miracle.
For example, suppose that an extraordinary event that had some religious significance was prophesied, testimony justified belief in the event's occurrence, the prophet had been right about certain predictions made in the past, and no immediate natural explanation for the event that had the least bit of plausibility was forthcoming.
Indeed, philosophy of religion, or at least natural theology and the analytic philosophy of religion is regarded as inconsequential by believers as well as some involved in the academic study of religion.

 Events
In particular, a difference in the relevant constitutive property is sufficient to distinguish events such as Caesar's death, construed as Caesar's exemplification of the property of dying, and Caesar's violent death, construed as his exemplification of the property of dying violently [Kim 1976].
On such theories, events are construed as sets of functions from spatiotemporal locations to "situation types" defined as sequences of objects standing or failing to stand in a certain relation.
As a characterization of event types this would be uncontroversial and would allow one to construe particular events as tokens of the corresponding type.

Hans Reichenbach [Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy]
Reichenbach received his degree in philosophy from the University at Erlangen in 1915; his dissertation on the theory of probability was published in 1916.
In 1926 Reichenbach became a professor of philosophy of physics at the University at Berlin.
His methods of teaching philosophy were something of a novelty; students found him easy to approach (this fact was uncommon in German universities); his courses were open to discussion and debate.

Experience and Philosophy: A Review of Hartshorne’s Creative Synthesis and Philosophic Method
His chief polemical focus is to show that individual events are the most concrete of things because the connectives between events, taken by themselves, are always somewhat abstract and indifferent to the adventitious determinations of the events connected.
Perhaps a person’s dominantly mental events are his own, not so much because they repeat a pattern intrinsically, but rather because they feel themselves always to be taking place in the environment of the person’s body, and that body is perceived to have a repeating pattern.
It is a condition for the later event, although the later event does not figure in its own constitution except in unusual cases of conscious anticipation.

Philosophy in a Time of Terror: Dialogues with Jurgen Habermas and Jacques Derrida, excerpt
At all events, a hopeful signal was the Afghanistan conference in Bonn, which, under the auspices of the UN, set the agenda in the right direction.3 However, after September 11 the European governments have completely failed.
To produce a "major event," it is, sad to say, not enough, and this has been true for some time now, to cause the deaths of some four thousand people, and especially "civilians," in just a few seconds by means of so-called advanced technology.
A major event should be so unforeseeable and irruptive that it disturbs even the horizon of the concept or essence on the basis of which we believe we recognize an event as such.

RECENT PHILOSOPHY: The Philosophy of Neo-Realism
Event is every being considered not as inert and indifferent to movement but in the categories of space and time, in the sense that the present event tells us its past and its future.
The categories of space and time are not sufficient to show the event in its true meaning; it must be considered as connected with the "totality of events" in the universe, in so far as the present event is enclosed in all the others and encompasses them.
Thus space does not have to be conceived of as a recipient common to all events, but as the order of the events themselves; and time is nothing else than the actual passage of matter from one condition to another.

Some of the skills developed from philosophy courses that can be useful in many aspects of life and work are critical thinking, analyzing complex information and arguments, problem solving, understanding different points of view and writing clearly, directly and logically, according to philosophy professor Dr. Sharon Ryan.
The evening will be an opportunity for students that are philosophy majors or who just have an interest in the subject and take some courses to see what philosophy graduates have done with their degree and help them decide what they can do with their life, according to Shapiro.

Student Research Days: Event History and Philosophy
The event has expanded from participation by exclusively predoctoral students and postdoctoral fellows to include medical, bachelor's and master's degree students, with increasing participation from main campus science departments.
Though many take the competitive aspect of the event quite seriously, emphasis over recent years has been placed upon SRD as an opportunity for students to show their research, to practice their presentation skills, and to interact with fellow students and faculty.
Participants in SRD 2003 were asked what their primary motivation was for entering the event; 80% noted their primary motivation as "an opportunity to show/discuss my research and practive my presentation skills"; the remaining participants noted their primary motivation as "cash award/prizes" or other reasons.

Michaels’ ability to conceptualize an event and then exceed customer expectations has been her hallmark and a primary reason why she has produced events around the world and coveted accounts, such as 20th Century Fox, NASA, Pepsi, Eastman Kodak, Mercedes-Benz and Microsoft, continue to contract her services.
It was about how the entire event was constructed, flowing and building continuously until you could almost see hearts pounding with energy, excitement and, best of all, emotional investment.
Although she is admittedly her own worst critic, which is enough of a barometer to judge the relative success of any event with which she is involved, Michaels does have a simple formula for measuring achievement.

In leaving the reader discover the details of how philosophy exists within the margins of its own discourse, I want to simply and briefly map out a number of, what may be called, "conceptual metaphors", that I have found captivating, intriguing and useful (for my own quest for difference).
Margins of Philosophy is, I believe, the best introduction to Derrida's work, containing some of his most significant and far-reaching essays.
This is asserted almost immediately in the introduction as Derrida lets us know that what philosophy (and philosophers) have pushed to the margin in their work is very important to explore since its unveiling will de-center the work.
