At this time, the concept of war was unfamiliar to humanity, so the forces of the Dark achieved quick gains before a war of attrition began.

Wheel of Time   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
The Wheel of Time is Robert Jordan's epic fantasy series.
General consensus appears to be that the series started strong, but began to bog down towards the middle of the series and has not yet recovered the qualities that made it so popular at first.
Whether the series is worthy of that comparison remains to be seen, but there are certainly many elements that the initial part of both series have in common.

 Time (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)
The question of whether there could be time without change has been debated by philosophers since the days of Plato and Aristotle, and has traditionally been thought to be closely tied to the question of whether time exists independently of the events that occur in time.
On this view, time is like an empty container into which events may be placed; but it is a container that exists independently of whether or not anything is placed in it.
His reason for this is that change (he says) is essential to time, and the B series without the A series does not involve genuine change (since B series positions are forever “fixed,” whereas A series positions are constantly changing).

The Wheel of Time for PC Review - PC The Wheel of Time Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
When The Wheel of Time was first announced, gamers and Robert Jordan fans had reason to be both excited and apprehensive.
Wheel of Time promised a mix of first-person action, role-playing, adventure, and strategy, which is a combination few games have ever effectively managed.
On the other hand, because the Wheel of Time novels are so deep, so intricate, and so well-loved by legions of devoted Jordan fans, the game seemed destined to disappoint.

Events which are told in flashback (like those of chapter 31 in the example above), or which we only learn about indirectly, will have their chapter numbers in non-bold type.
Unfortunately, it is not always possible to exactly nail an event in the story down to a particular day.

 Review of Wheel of Time
Wheel of Time offers standard gameplay in the majority of the game, and the elements that attempt to break out of convention fail miserably.
Ter'angreal are magical items, and in Jordan's series, they were one of a kind items which augmented or changed in some way the access the characters had to the True Power.
Worse, before a later patch, Wheel of Time multiplayer needed a dedicated server to run, so if you wanted to just run around a map to see where all the good items were, you were out of luck if didn't have your own personal computer network.

To counter this imbalance, the Wheel caused the Dragon, a channeler of immense power, to be born as the champion of the Light.

Jordan's talent for sustaining the difficult combination of suspense and resolution, so necessary in a multivolume series such as this one (which includes The Fires of Heaven, LJ 11/15/93), is nothing short of remarkable.
