 The Great Disappointment of 1844
Rather, "The Great Disappointment of 1844" performs the invaluable service of sifting through the last generation of scholarship on the subject to provide a narrative that is both readable and current.
The study of the Parousia Event of 1844 naturally overshadows the Millerite Movement (as it does the contemporary Taiping and Babist movements).
It is a commonplace among historians that the great events of those years, the US Civil War and the First and Second World Wars, were to a greater or lesser extent "Wars of Armageddon," fought by societies for reasons that were essentially millenarian.

Is the Door of Mercy Shut? - March 1998
The 2300 day-year prophecy of Daniel 8:14 was to end on October 22, 1844, with an event in the heavenly sanctuary.
Following October 22, 1844, many believed that the "door of Mercy" was shut and probation had closed for all mankind.
This experience of knocking, entreating and entrance is explained thus: "They shall go with their flocks and with their herds to seek the Lord; [a mediator for all the world, in the Holy Place] but they shall not find Him; He hath withdrawn himself [to the Most Holy] from them.

1844 Re-Examined [Section 9- Some Observations on the Millerite andPioneer Seventh-dayAdventist Movements]
It is not an allegory of historical events in 1844.
If Daniel 8:14 only points to what happened in 1844, we might conclude that the 1844 event was a "fizzle." In the light of history the 1844 movement certainly looks feeble compared to the Reformation of the sixteenth century.
If the shut-door formulation of the first ten years was not the final revelation of truth about the 1844 event, perhaps the investigative judgment doctrine, also formulated in the nineteenth century, was not the final word on the meaning of 1844.

From His ascension until 1844, Jesus had been applying the forgiveness He purchased on the cross in the first compartment of the sanctuary, but in 1844, He entered the second compartment and began to investigate the lives of those who had received forgiveness to see if they were worthy of eternal life.
Those doctrines consisted of righteousness by faith, the human nature of Christ, the events of 1844, assurance of salvation, and the authority of Ellen White.
Though he argued that 1844 had no biblical significance, he did believe that God had indeed raised the SDA denomination up to emphasize, along with righteousness by faith, such doctrines as sabbatarianism, creationism, conditional immortality, and premillennialism.

 ©Damsteegt: Blessings of the Disappointment
Instead of calling October 22, 1844 the day of the great disappointment, they prefer to call it the great disillusion and complain that the Millerite emphasis on time setting did great harm to Christianity and created suspicion about anything having to do with the second advent.
During 1843 and 1844, attention of the Adventists became more and more directed to Christ's heavenly ministry and its connection to the cleansing of the sanctuary at the end of the 2300 prophetic years.
As they further probed the relationship between sanctuary typology (Leviticus 16 and 23) and the sanctuary prophecy of Daniel 8, it dawned on the pioneers that the true meaning of Daniel 8:14 was that at the end of the 2300 years Christ was to embark on the final phase of His atoning ministry.

Because of the shared religious aspects, when the missionaries came in 1844, the backdrop for the successful introduction of Catholic beliefs to the Kalispels was promising.
Since the 1844 founding of the Mission on the Pend Oreille River, the Kalispel native country saw rapid political change with the Oregon Treaty of 1846, establishing it within American jurisdiction, and the Donation Act of 1850, which gave lands to settlers without regard to any claim that the Indians might have.
The study of the St. Ignatius Mission, Washington, 1844 to 1854, provides a view that the struggle between the Natives of the Oregon Territory and the emigrants was difficult for the Kalispel Indians.
