Chapter Summaries of Kenneth Stampp's "America in 1857"   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Charles Francis Adams was appalled by the attempts to "canonize an assassin." In this chapter Stampp expands on the "matrix" of events, the influx of culturally contrasting immigrants and the reactionary nativism, the expanding railroads and the Tariff of 1857, the slave insurrection paranoia since the 1831 Nat Turner rebellion, urban crime, and other issues.
The primary event, for Stampp, is the Kansas crisis.
In 1857 this division in the antislavery position formed part of the matrix Stampp says was affecting the Kansas crisis, including the disruption of political parties and pressure on Buchanan even within the Democratic party that might provide some explanation for Buchanan's disastrous policies.

Earthquake History: DISCUSSION   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Except for the two largest events, the great 1857 and 1906 earthquakes that together ruptured two-thirds of the total length of the San Andreas fault, large earthquakes are conspicuously absent along the master fault itself.
Except for the central, creeping segment, where numerous small events occur, the San Andreas fault is almost completely aseismic during the long intervals between its rupture in major earthquakes (see Figure 5.6) and Figure 5.9).
Recent studies of the rupture dynamics of M 6 events occurring within seismically active regions indicate that the rupture zones of these events are similarly aseismic, with smaller events occurring predominantly outside the slip surface, even during the aftershock sequence (Reasenberg and Ellsworth, 1982; Hartzell and Heaton, 1986; Mendoza and Hartzell, 1988).

FTHA History - The Great 1857 "Fort Tejon" Earthquake
The 1857 and 1906 events were both on the San Andreas Fault, although the 1906 earthquake ruptured the northern segment of the fault, from Hollister (San Benito Co.) northward, for 400 km (250 miles).
Duration of shaking, along the fault, for both 1857 and 1906 is estimated to be as long as two minutes.

This focus on the events of 1857 that led to the Civil War is of considerable value for research of the United States history prior to and in the early stages of the Civil War, in order to acquire knowledge of particular persons and particular events that precipitated the war.
Stampp's argument for the events of 1857 as "the point of no return." acknowledges a potential variance, but he persuasively presents such a series of events suggesting impending civil war.
In the process, Stampp has informed us of many events to which Seward was likely referring in his "Irrepressible Conflict" speech.

 My City - Meerut
Meerut leapt into international prominence during the revolt of 1857, when on 24 April, 1857, eighty-five troopers out of ninety of the third cavalry refused to touch the cartridges and after court martial, were sentenced to ten years imprisonment.
However, the events of 1857 established the British authority firmly and they began to create an elaborate system of transportation and communication; and a chain of English schools to turn out an army of intermediaries between the rulers and the ruled.
Since Meerut was the most important town in the western part of the United Provinces, and a better centre of commerce, education and politics, it contained a higher proportion of men engaged in the liberal professions, in the judiciary and in business.

Perhaps the new genre and Collins's ambivalent attitudes owe something to context in which his readers would have viewed any subject associated with India after the 1857 Sepoy rebellion, produced by an English failure to understand the deeply religious nature of India's Muslims and Hindus.
The storming of the Seringapatam, in 1799, which establishes the importance of the moonstone and the curse which follows its misuse, was part of the continued interest in India.

 The Causes Of The Rebellion
he events of 1857 were unique both in terms of historical precedence and in terms of the socio-political sphere as far as India was concerned.
Later on after 1857, the British by and large accepted it as one of the principal causes of the rebellion of 1857.
Thus after 1857 the British Government which assumed the Government of India decided to ally with the feudals whereas before 1857 their predecessor the EEIC were following an excellent policy of destroying feudalism in India.

The Sepoys wait in their cantonments, they realize that events are moving fast; they are bewildered and it seems to them that unless they do something, they will be disarmed, and then perhaps, as they have heard, they will be shot down.
But after 1857 the Government attitude was dominated by a fear that the Mutiny should ever happen again; there was a preoccupation with religion and with the susceptibilities of the people.
