AmCham's Economic Forum in Monterrey. | North America > Mexico from AllBusiness.com
AMCHAM -- Monterrey members had the opportunity to hear Everardo Elizondo, vice-governor of the Mexican Central Bank, present a detailed view of the economic expectations for the coming year at AMCHAM's Economic Forum, this past October 14.
In his presentation, entitled "Notes on recent economic evolution," Elizondo explained that the expectations of economic growth in the U.S. have been adjusted downwards as a consequence of the hurricanes, and the depreciation of the yen has been a consequence, in part, of monetary politicies.
In the national overview, he pointed out that during 2005 the expectations of inflation have shown a clear tendency towards the low, and that the inflation anticipated for 2005 reduced from 3.7 percent in last August's survey to 3.6 percent in September's.

The growth estimate by the bank's deputy governor, Everardo Elizondo, was at the top end of a previously forecast range of between 4 and 4.5 percent.
The economy has sped along this year on the back of a strong U.S. economy, but a feared slowdown north of the border is expected to put the brakes on Mexico's growth.
In a speech in the northern city of Monterrey, the central banker said the economy would grow 3.9 percent in the third quarter and then ease off to 3.7 percent expansion between October and December.

Policy makers are looking to slow a jump in consumer prices that Elizondo said has made the central bank's year-end inflation target of 4 percent unattainable.
Elizondo said that consumer prices have risen less this year than companies' costs have, suggesting that business executives have managed to offset some of those cost increases by getting higher productivity out of workers.
Elizondo said that companies also probably have allowed the rise in costs to shrink their profit margins rather than pass on all the increases to consumers.

Combining these forces leads Latin American enterprises that seek capital (both equity and debt) to improve their corporate governance in order to comply with the higher standards of transparency, accountability and independence.
Everardo Elizondo, Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Mexico, shared with participants the results of a survey on corporate governance that pinpointed three of the major challenges that Mexican companies need to address: protection of minority shareholders, the lack of clear and sufficient information, and an insufficient number of independent directors on their boards.
He argued that these traits of Mexican corporate governance are conditioning the flow of investment, which is lower than it would otherwise be, thus becoming a factor hindering economic development.

Oct. 12 (Bloomberg) -- Mexico may keep raising interest rates to curb a pickup in inflation that has been led by food and energy prices, deputy central bank governor Everardo Elizondo said.
While Elizondo said he expects annual inflation to start slowing this month as increases in commodity prices ease, he said that reaching the 4 percent year-end inflation target is ``well beyond optimistic.''
``We are aware some of the increases we observed in recent months had such a significant impact that a quick return to the target is difficult,'' said Elizondo, one of four deputy governors under bank Governor Guillermo Ortiz.
