The Somerset & Dorset Railway - Bath to Templecombe Section
Bath (Queen Square) station, which formed the northern starting point of Somerset and Dorset trains, was a small terminus of fairly conventional type, having two platform roads and two central carriage lines, with an arched glass roof covering the whole width of the station for about half the length of the platforms.
There were only two platforms at Evercreech Junction, and the unusual width between them was a reminder that from Glastonbury to Cole space was originally provided for a double broad gauge track.
Really heavy grades ended at Evercreech, but climbing on a minor scale was resumed to a summit at Wincanton.

Work on this line started in 1872, and it was on the 20th July 1874 that the Evercreech to Bath Junction section was opened, 26 miles in length, and costing £400,000.
When this extension was opened, the route between Bath and Bournemouth became the 'main line', with the Evercreech Junction (as it became known) to Burnham section becoming a 'branch'.
The section of line between Evercreech Junction and Templecombe was doubled in 1884, along with the section between Midford and Radstock, with the Radstock to Binegar and Evercreech Junction to Evercreech New sections of line being doubled in 1885/86.
