Everett was an unsuccessful candidate for Vice President of the United States in the 1860 election on the Constitutional Union ticket.
Born in Boston, Massachusetts to the Rev. Oliver Everett and Lucy (Hill) Everett, he attended Boston Latin School and graduated as the valedictorian from Harvard University in 1811, studied theology under the urging of the Rev. Joseph Stevens Buckminster, and was ordained pastor of the Brattle Street Unitarian Church, Boston, in 1814.
Everett was a professor of Greek literature at Harvard University, an overseer of the University, and its president from 1846 to 1849.

Everett was Latin tutor at Harvard, and in 1814 he was chosen to fill the newly formed chair of Greek literature, to qualify himself for which he spent more than four years (from the spring of 1815 to the autumn of 1819) in Europe, studying for two years in the University of G6ttingen.
Everett's powers as an orator are nowhere displayed to greater advantage than in that passage in his Fourth of July address delivered at Dorchester, Massachusetts, in 1855, in which he epitomizes, in a single eloquent paragraph, the far-reaching consequences of the battle of Lexington.
Everett labored zealously in detente of the Union, but posed to extend "eternal reconciliation toward those whom he wrong" and his last public service was one of humanity in behalf of southern sufferers by the conflict, at the meeting in Faneuil hall on Monday, 9 January 1865, for the relief of the peopie of Savannah.
