Evergreen in July was awarded a $1.5 million annual subsidy by the federal Department of Transportation to provide twice weekly cargo and passenger jet service to Adak, under the condition the airline would purchase a Boeing 727-100 combi or similar airplane by mid-November.
The problem for Evergreen now is that airlines have been prohibited from flying cargo in the bellies of passenger aircraft under a new rule by the Federal Aviation Administration put in place immediately after the terrorist attacks on the East Coast.
Evergreen and other airlines in Alaska are hopeful of some congressional help to, among other things, allow cargo and passengers on the same airplane.

If Evergreen accepts extension on these terms, should Patriot wish to assume the service on the basis of its initial offer and is found responsible to do so, Evergreen is to be terminated without indemnity and replaced by Patriot for the remainder of the extended term.

US-based cargo operator Evergreen International Airlines has received conditional approval from the Air Transportation Stabilization Board (ATSB) of its application for a Federal guarantee under the Air Transportation Safety and System Stabilization Act (Act), the ATSB said.
Although Evergreen had asked for a government guarantee of $148.5 million, representing 99 percent of the total financing package, the ATSB extended a guarantee of $90 million.
In a letter to Evergreen chairman, Delford Smith, the board said that while Evergreen had demonstrated that its business plan was financially sound, certain terms of the proposed loan transaction were unacceptable to the Board.
