Captain Smith was killed in an auto accident in 1995, and the museum was renamed in his memory as the Captain Michael King Smith Evergreen Aviation Educational Institute.
This replica of that airplane was built by Century Aviation in Wenatchee, Washington from plans prepared by the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum from the original plane.
