The Music Box: Tears for Fears - Everybody Loves a Happy Ending (Album Review)
Unfortunately, it also marked the end of the group’s reign as Smith departed the following year after the quarreling with his collaborator became unbearable.
Call Me Mellow, the first single from Everybody Loves a Happy Ending, is a genuine gem that just may be the most ebullient and infectious tune that the ensemble has ever concocted — and it’s far from alone on an album that is bathed in the gleaming, lysergic glow of radiant sunshine.
Merging bursts of Philly soul with the psychedelic swirl of The Beatles and the lush majesty of The Beach Boys, Orzabal and Smith sculpt dense layers of sound from a dizzying array of textured keyboards, churning guitars, dreamy harmonies, burbling basses, and swollen strings in order to form an edifying concoction of rapturous bliss.

This is the closest they have come to crafting a possible hit single in years, and it's a testament to their "still flexing" pop chops that they can meld a bittersweet piano dirge with a sunny '70s soft rock chorus without sounding contrived.

"If only I were half my age and she was younger," laments Tears for Fears' Roland Orzabal on "Call Me Mellow," one of the many standout tracks on Everybody Loves a Happy Ending, the band's first new album in nine years.
After the 1989 release of the painstakingly recorded The Seeds of Love, things went south for the group.
Everybody Loves a Happy Ending is a comeback in every sense of the word, its music as colorful and bursting with creative detail as its psychedelic cover art.

On Everybody Loves A Happy Ending, we see a band obsessed with elaborate, epic-sounding arrangements that really take the songwriting to an elevated level.
The climactic ending sounds like it's the beginning of a giant production - such is desired effect, one would assume, given the theatre curtains on the album's cover.
Everybody Loves A Happy Ending is a surprisingly unique and inventive release, and it is certainly a new concept for Tears For Fears.

Even the album cover is a little scary with a picture of the devil, skulls with arms and legs coming out of their mouths and eye sockets, clowns and some strange totem pole.
Another disappointing point of this song is the fact that this is a love song about a girl who does not think the boy is not up to par with her standards.
I am sad hearted to say that Everybody Loves a Happy Ending may be a hint for Tears for Fears.

In the U.S., No. 1 hits like "Shout" and "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" -- taken from 1985's soul-sleek Songs From the Big Chair -- were just as synapse-tickling in their ambition to reach cathartic heights.
Everybody Loves a Happy Ending, the first TFF album featuring both men since 1989's Beatlesque The Seeds of Love, won't change the band's reputation as serious musicians who elevate the IQ of the radio waves.
In fact, the album was originally due out in April, but ended up being released by Universal in September after a record-label shakeup.

Tears For Fears - Everybody Loves a Happy Ending CD Review
Everybody Loves a Happy Ending marks the official reunification of Tears for Fears, however long it may last.
“Everybody Loves a Happy Ending”; starts off the album in the way that has come to dominate Tears for Fears since the 1980s: that of a group mixing pop sounds with a jazzy, big band (a small big band) feeling.
In fact, Orzabal opines that “this is the album that should have followed Seeds of Love in many ways.” This sounds evident throughout, both from the melodies and instrumental choices.

BBC - Classic Rock/Pop Review - Tears For Fears, Everybody Loves A Happy Ending
Everybody Loves A Happy Ending marks the first proper Tears For Fears record since The Seeds Of Love, and what is most striking at first is how little different it sounds.
It is curious, though, how such classic purveyors of the electro-pop duo template have ended up comfortably snuggled up in their parents' record collection.
ELAHE is a little 'mellow' (pardon the pun) for me but, as your reviewer points out, they are in their mid-40's.

 Everybody Loves a Happy Ending
Everybody Loves a Happy Ending Editorial Review: Among the benefits of picking up the new Tears for Fears album--the band's first since 1989--maybe the least obvious is looking cool in front of friends.
Flick it on over cocktails, say, and brows will furrow: Few would think to match the heaving, synth-heavy boys who lit up the '80s with "Head Over Heels" to this new material.
It's there on the title track and first single "Call Me Mellow," and only slightly eclipsed by something pleasantly Bacharach-ish on "Secret World." Everybody who loves a happy ending will find one here: Tears for Fears skirts the has-been trap impressively, translating years of experience into play-it-again, sophisticated modern pop worth paying attention to.

Tears For Fears delivered some uncommonly strong pop music in the 1980s - from the melancholy longing of "Mad World" and "Pale Shelter" to the soaring shuffle-step of "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" to the sophisticated orchestration of "Sowing The Seeds Of Love" and "Woman In Chains".
Its relatively upbeat nature might take some by surprise - indeed, this is a far "happier" album than either Songs From The Big Chair or The Seeds Of Love.
"Secret World" and "Last Days On Earth" are genuine love songs, something that TFF fans will recognize as somewhat of a genre shift for Orzabal and Smith.

Tears for Fears: Everybody Loves a Happy Ending - PopMatters Music Review
Surely, the group's greatest hit, "Everybody Wants to Rule the World", is more prescient now than upon its 1985 release ("I can't stand this indecision / Married with a lack of vision").
These are grand gestures, but then Happy Ending is an album full of grand gestures and mighty choruses, such as on "Closest Thing to Heaven", which ranks behind only Todd Rundgren's "Afterlife" from his sterling album Liars in the category of 2004's most blissful ballads pertaining to issues of the divine.
If, as the liner notes suggest, Happy Ending is this incarnation of TFF's swan song, Orzabal and Smith can rest assured that they've bowed out with their integrity and legacy fully intact, having retaken their positions on the big chair for the fleeting moments which remain before this wave of '80s romanticism ends.

The result is the masterpiece "Everybody Loves A Happy Ending." I will make one statement that will explain how good this record is. "Everybody Loves A Happy Ending" sounds like it could have been the follow up to The Beatles "Abbey Road" album.
At rhe end there is a nice string coda and then you hear an audience coughing and clapping sort of like what was going on with The Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club record.

This is the forth record from the founding members of Tears For Fears, Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith (Orzabal cranked out several other enjoyable records without Smith during the ‘90s using the bands’ name), and their first in over a decade.
The title track smacks of the Beatles’ “A Day In The Life,” with lots of mid-song tempo changes and a sing-a-long chorus, but Tears For Fears have never been afraid to admit that the Beatles were a major influence on their work.

British duo Tears for Fears released three albums in the '80s, including chart-topper "Songs From the Big Chair." Following 1989 disc "The Seeds of Love," bandmates Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith parted ways, with Orzabal carrying the act's torch and Smith releasing solo projects.

The vocals of lead singer Roland Orzabal, powered by some all-cylinders thing, still squash all traces of irony in their path, and there's a moodiness to the music, minus a lot of the old broodiness, that borders on the masterly.
