Of course, the Modern Library would begin to add titles by American authors in the 1920s, and also titles that were not 'modern.' Everyman's Library began to add titles that were 'modern' in the 1930s.
The Modern Library was undoubtedly inspired by the success of Everyman's Library (20 million books sold between 1906 and 1924), which predates it by more than a decade.
In 1925 the Modern Library was sold to Bennett Cerf and Donald Klopfer, and the series eventually became the cornerstone of Random House publishers.

Everyman's Library is a series of reprinted classic literature currently published by Alfred A. Knopf (a division of Random House) in the United States, and Weidenfeld and Nicolson in the United Kingdom.
Everyman's Library books were pocket-sized hardcovers that sold initially for what was then the remarkably low price of a shilling apiece.
After ceasing the publication of new titles in the 1970s, Everyman's Library was relaunched internationally by Knopf in the fall of 1991, a move which was praised by many notable authors.

Review of Terry Seymour's "A Guide to Collecting Everyman's Library"
In addition, as Everyman's (and Modern) Library dealer Joe Hill will attest, Everyman's titles have a market beyond the collector, as a significant number are still the most readily available scholarly editions of important fiction and non-fiction titles.
This is stupendous information for Everyman's collectors, as it is clear which titles are easy to find and which ones are difficult - and helps focus the search for tough titles on the internet (with over 1000 titles, it is vital to narrow the search).
Everyman's 1081 different titles contain many more classic literary works, many with extensive scholarly introductions, and has numerous titles in biography, history, science, travel, and oratory.

While affordability may no longer be an issue in our affluent society, quality certainly is.  Literary Encyclopedia: Everyman
It survives only in printed form: two fragmentary copies survive in the Bodleian Library (1508-25) and the British Library (1525-30) printed by Richard Pynson, and two complete (but differing) editions printed by John Skot survive in the Huntington Library (1528-9) and the British Library (1530-5).
Although there has been disagreement over the precise relationship between these two plays, Everyman is now usually considered to be a translation from the earlier Flemish play Elckerlijc.
Even though all the printed copies of the play certainly date from the early sixteenth century, they are translations derived from a late-fifteenth century Flemish Rederijkers’ (rhetoricians’) play called Elckerlijc.

 ArtsJournal: About Last Night
I mention this because I only just discovered that the Everymans Library edition of Brideshead Revisited, the novel Waugh edited most ruthlessly, not only reprints the revised version but includes an introductory essay by Frank Kermode in which Waugh’s changes are discussed at length and in detail.
I knew about these changes but had never actually seen the revised version of Brideshead, so I picked up a copy of the Everymans Library edition and read it day before yesterday en route to Minnesota.
But not when it comes to the revised version of Brideshead Revisited, which I commend to your attention not only as a generally superior literary experience but also as a little-known chapter in the history of aesthetic second thoughts.
