In "Everyone Says I Love You," everyone sings -- Alan Alda, Goldie Hawn, Julia Roberts, Tim Roth -- everyone except Drew Barrymore.

"Everyone Says I Love You" isn't meant to be taken seriously as a musical and it isn't designed to be as thoughtful and layered as your usual Allen film.

I would rank Everyone Says I Love You as one of Woody Allen's lesser efforts, but one which is still worthwhile to see for fans of Allen as a filmmaker, rather than as a comedian.
A mish-mash of the mundane and divine, Everyone Says I Love You hits enough right notes to recommend, but with Allen struggling to maintain cohesion in this genre that he is clearly uncomfortable in, most of those notes were probably struck on accident than by design.

Inspired and exasperating in equal measure, Everyone Says I Love You -- Woody Allen's most conceptually audacious film since 1983's Zelig -- is so relentlessly charming and likable that you may not realize how awful much of it was until you're on your way home afterwards.
Trouble is, the frame on which these delightful set pieces are mounted is a bit rickety; omit the songs (which are merely set pieces -- with few exceptions, they don't advance the plot or even reveal character) and what remains is tiresome and uninvolving and not half as funny as it ought to be.
It's the archaic genre that's the true star of Everyone Says I Love You, however, and whenever the actors stepped forward to croon a standard off-key, or obligingly attempted a little softshoe, I felt a lunatic grin spreading across my face.

Allen doesn't have the panache that could pull off sequences like the one in "Everyone Says I Love You" where shop-window mannequins come to life, or a later one where Allen and Hawn (as the ex-wife he's still on good terms with) dance by the Seine, and she literally floats up in the air.
