Everything but the Girl debuted in 1982 with a samba interpretation of Cole Porter's "Night and Day"; the single was a success on the U.K. independent charts, but the duo nonetheless went on hiatus as Thorn recorded a solo EP, A Distant Shore, while Watt checked in with the full-length North Marine Drive in 1983.
EBTG soon reunited to record a cover of the Jam's "English Rose" for an NME sampler; the track so impressed former Jam frontman Paul Weller that he invited the duo to contribute to the 1984 LP Cafe Bleu, the debut from his new project, the Style Council.
In 1994, EBTG collaborated with trip-hop innovators Massive Attack on their LP Protection; Thorn's vocal turn highlighted the hit title track, and the cinematic Massive Attack sound clearly informed Everything but the Girl's own 1994 effort, Amplified Heart, another strong and eclectic outing featuring an appearance by guitar great Richard Thompson.

Everything but the Girl's resurrection as a sophisticated electronica outfit may have been unpredictable, but it certainly revitalized the duo's music.
House music -- everything from classic '80s house to contemporary house -- serves as the musical foundation, which actually opens the doors for slight jazzy inflections, along with long, hypnotizing instrumental passages (most notably on "Compression").

I find it problematic that you chose to use “girl” instead of woman or even female in your report on the ‘A’ Star awards for achievement in technology GCSE and A-Level exams (Girl techies need better support, 18 December).
One would suppose that since the tagline of the story used the word 'women', a synonym was required to avoid repetition.
'Girl' does seem to have been a strange choice though, and perhaps 'female' would have been a better choice.

Amazon.co.uk: The Best of Everything But the Girl: Music: Everything But The Girl
Everything but the Girl (Ben Watt and ex-Marine Girl Tracey Thorn) have gone through two distinct phases in their career--they spent most of it as an acoustic, folky duo with some occasional lounge accompaniment, but after a Todd Terry remix of Amplified Heart's "Missing", they veered toward the dance floor.
As a slightly lopsided introduction to EBTG, this collection is fine but you might do better buying a few albums instead (start with Amplified Heart, Idlewild, and Walking Wounded).

Top moments from one of the great sad voices of the last couple of decades during the twenty-year history of Everything But the Girl, producer Ben Watt has laid down Spartan arrangements for the supple, mournful voice of Tracy Thorn and then stepped out of the way.
Over the course of their two-decades-long career, U.K. duo Everything but the Girl has evolved from stylized, loungey pop to dance-driven futurist pop.
By the time of EBTG's self-titled American debut, Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt had already begun moving away from the cafe pop that had aligned their U.K. debut, Eden (which came out earlier the same year), with mannered faux-jazz Brits such as the...

With Walking Wounded, Everything but the Girl puts an acceptable face on trip-hop, jungle, and techno, opening up the world of experimental dance music to a new audience.
At its core, Everything but the Girl is a pop group, which means it automatically abandons the free-form song structures that characterize most of trip-hop and techno.
Furthermore, Everything but the Girl never approaches the tarnished glamour of Portishead, the kineticism of Björk, or the brilliantly evocative soundscapes of Tricky.

The Revealer: Everything But the Girl
Proposition 73, also known as the "tell a parent" initiative, is a proposed constitutional amendment that would require doctors to notify parents at least 48 hours before carrying out an abortion on a minor, leaving the abortion seeker herself a passive observer.
Parents’ Right to Know mailed out 2,000 DVDs with two- and four-minute versions of a video where five girls and their stories of seduction, sex, pregnancy, and a clandestine abortion are spliced together into a poignant set of images.
Regardless of the unique faith-based grassroots element to this battle, the most surprising element seems to be the lack of inclusion of the affected group themselves: girls under 18.

Anyway, when Everything But The Girl appeared, their sound was a release from the usually dour and depressing (and brilliant) rock.
If I had to really nail down a descriptor of Everything But The Girl, I’d say that they are a funkier, more sophisticated kind of trip-hop crossed with textured and thumping indie pop.
Anyway, Everything But The Girl debuted in 1984 with Eden many albums followed including the nearly-brilliant 1988 effort Idlewild.

Not for new or old fans of Everything But The Girl, Idlewild borders on the category of total failure.
Their catalogue is intimidating however as much as I really want to love them the music doesn’t do anything for me. It is on the whole too cold and detached not to mention melodramatic and painfully unoriginal.
These words, remember, come from out the mouth of a girl particularly fond of electronica and trip-hop alike—to genres to which EBTG’s more recent works are part of.

Both were signed separately to an indie label called Cherry Red and soon enough got together under the guise Everything But The Girl to release a collaborative single before binning their own projects and joining forces on a more permanent basis two years on in 1984.
Getting straight into it after signing to Blanco Y Negro, Tracy and Ben released their first ever album as a group called Eden.

Vocalist Tracy Thorn and multi-instrumentalist Ben Watt began making music together as Everything But the Girl in the early '80s while students at Hull University in the U.K. By the '90s their spare-yet-sensual, jazz-inflected tunes evolved nito a richly textured fusion of pop and electronica-"Pop-Tronica"-that shimmered with diverse musical idioms.
Not only have EBTG adapted successfully to the changing trends of the music industry, they have retained a consistently individual sound and sensibility.
Since Thorn's vocal turn on Massive Attack's PROTECTION (1995) and EBTG's own 1995 hit, "Missing," the duo have been recognized as prime movers in electronica and DJ circles, and it is this aspect of EBTG that ADAPT OR DIE addresses.

Originating at the turn of the 1980s as a leader of the lite-jazz movement, Everything but the Girl became an unlikely success story more than a decade later, emerging at the vanguard of the fusion between pop and electronica.
The jazz-pop confections of the group's early work gave way to shimmering jangle rock by the time of 1985's Love Not Money, while a subtle country influence crept into the mix for 1986's lush, orchestral Baby, the Stars Shine Bright.
