This album would be remarkable if it were made at any point in time but it just takes on so many layers of poignancy if you look at their history.
Everything Must Go treads a thin line between epic and emotionless but just comes out on the right side.
Everything must go, while not my favorite manics album by far, is a simply beautiful work of art, tracks flow seemlessly into each other, with tracks such as A Design For Life,...

Manic Street Preachers - Send Away the Tigers - Columbia Records - CD
After several years and albums of exploring many musical directions, Send Away the Tigers embraces many of the different faces of the band over the years, and streamlines their sound, much like U2’s All That You Can’t Leave Behind.
As well, the band has honed their skills at writing amazingly catchy songs too; “Your Love Alone is Not Enough” is hooky and memorable in all the right places, and again “Autumnsong” is a bracing anthem.
Every record the Manics have released since Everything Must Go sounded as if it could be their last.

Their 1996 album Everything Must Go is thunderous and engrossing, a rapture from start to finish.
Unfortunately, since their last album bombed in the US thanks to the non-existant promotion by Sony, it went unissued here until Virgin Records America licensed it in mid-99 and then they did the usual half-assed Virgin US job of promotion and it too bombed.
It was a hit album which generated three top 10 singles ("So Why So Sad" the standout), but with muted critical response and mumbles that the band was trying too hard to recapture past glories.

Manic Street Preachers, Everything Must Go (2006), Album Review
The multi Brit winning 1996 album by Manic Street Preachers, Everything Must Go, is back; digitally remastered, sexed up with new tracks and a DVD and put in the nicest packaging you've seen in your life.
Everything Must Go established the Manics as one of the biggest bands on the planet and though the original cut will ceaselessly stand next to the likes of Definitely Maybe and Modern Life Is Rubbish as one of the greatest Brit-pop-rock albums of all time, this new fangled remixed version is definitely its superior.
With Mike Hedges, producer, and the band talking about how the album began, developed and succeeded, this is an incomparable insight into the creative process that has been the subject of intrigue for the 10 years since the LPs first release.

Above all, Everything Must Go is a cathartic experience -- it is genuinely moving to hear the Manics offering hope without sinking to mawkish sentimentality or collapsing under the weight of their situation.
True, the album is a collection of B-sides, non-album singles, radio sessions, and live tracks but, like the Smiths' Hatful of Hollow before it, the album illustrates the band's strengths more effectively than their debut album, Olympian.

The cathartic album title perfectly reflected not only its contents but the band itself: following the traumatic breakdown and disappearance of Richey Edwards, the other Manics were left to pick up the pieces--it was an extraordinary and unexpected recovery.
...EVERYTHING MUST GO is a string-drenched Phil Spector/Kashmir collision, 'A Design For Life' is rugged and perfect, and 'The Girl Who Wanted To Be God' is splendid soaring pop....a bold and frequently remarkable album.
Highlights of the album are "Small fl flowers that grow in the sky" which is one of their best songs and some of Richey` best lyrics.
