Search, Click, Buy Online: DVDs: Everything Is Illuminated
Everything is Illuminated is one of my favorite novels of all time, mostly due to Foer's inventive writing style and vivid characterizations, but also because of the powerful storyline that is echoed across multiple timelines.
I actually believe that this movie is so different from the book in tone, vision, character, and meaning, that had Liev Schreiber made and released the movie under a different title and changed the characters names, no one would have ever made the connection to the original "source" material.
Everything is Illuminated is an art film, but it is not one in the typical way.

Everything Is Illuminated Movie Review - Everything Is Illuminated Movie Trailer - The Boston Globe
That leaves a vacuum at the center of the movie which Hutz and Leskin are more than happy to fill, and the gulf between what these two say to each other in Ukrainian and what they tell Jonathan in English is often cataclysmically funny.
At this point, "Everything Is Illuminated" becomes heavy with the ghosts of the past.
The movie's emotional climax is told to us by one of the characters, but the director can hardly bring himself to show it.

Powell's Books - Everything Is Illuminated: Movie Tie-In by Jonathan Safran Foer
Everything Is Illuminated is both hilarious and deeply moving.
Everything Is Illuminated is Jonathan Safran Foer's remarkable debut novel, the story of a young writer named Jonathan Safran Foer traveling in Eastern Europe to find out more about his family's history and its possible connection to (and escape from) the Holocaust.
Passionate, wildly inventive, and marked by an indelible humanity, Everything Is Illuminated mines the fl holes of history and is ultimately a story about searching: for people and places that no longer exist, for the hidden truths that haunt every family, and for the delicate but necessary tales that link past and future.

Reeling: the Movie Review Show's review of Everything Is Illuminated
At first, Everything Is Illuminated” appears to be heading down an eccentric path that is sometimes funny but mostly just weird.
The humor and silliness that is part of “Everything Is Illuminated” is tempered with Shreiber’s subtle examination of the World War II holocaust as seen from the microcosm of the Ukrainian countryside.
Everything Is Illuminated” is a fascinating debut for it auteur but one that will be hard pressed to appeal to the masses.

Everything is Illuminated - Rotten Tomatoes
'Everything' becomes a rather foolishly optimistic term to lead off your title when the only thing illuminated is the window next to the projection light.
Nevertheless, Everything Is Illuminated has a haunting afterglow, one that neither satisfies nor illuminates, but at least keeps the flame alive.

'Everything Is Illuminated' - MOVIE REVIEW - Los Angeles Times - calendarlive.com
In Liev Schreiber's "Everything Is Illuminated," Wood's eyes seem to take in everything and reveal nothing.
Wood plays Jonathan Safran Foer, an aspiring writer and namesake of the author of the book on which the movie is based, who travels from Brooklyn, N.Y., to the Ukraine to find Augustine, the woman who saved his grandfather from the Nazis.
The contrast between Jonathan and Alex, while funny in the book, is starkly illuminated by the movie.

Dragged in the beginning and was interesting towards the middle and end of the movie.

Movie Thunder :: Review :: Everything Is Illuminated
Even if the movie has been out for some time and an opening-night viewing is literally impossible, this rating indicates it would have been worth the opening night hassle.
Usually, I mention the movie's storyline in a short paragraph, and then I proceed to either praise or bash the movie as a whole.
I also mentioned how I thought Everything Is Illuminated was one of these limited-release movies that should have been pushed to the moon (even though I hadn't seen it yet).

Movie Review for Everything Is Illuminated
Everything Is Illuminated is the latest project for Wood, where he plays-- you guessed it--an odd duck.
The movie is based on the novel by Jonathan Safran Foer, which is the same name given to Elijah’s character.
In the movie version, we are given one fairly straight- forward story and then other stories are introduced towards the end, with existential and whimsical angles.

MovieFreak.com - "Everything is Illuminated" Movie Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-21)
For now I'll have to trust that the film is a fine adaptation since it is prompting me to move the book to the top of the list.
"Everything is Illuminated" is based on Jonathan Safran Foer's best selling novel about a young man named Jonathan Safran Foer (Elijah Wood in a fine performance) who journeys to the Ukraine to track down the woman who saved his Jewish grandfather from the Holocaust to pay proper respect and thanks.
Foer is a bookish somber 'collector' who literally Baggies practically ever piece of ephemeras that has some significant personal value to him so he won't forget what it meant at the specific time he has saved it.

Everything Is Illuminated Movie Review, DVD Release - Filmcritic.com
The trick with movie adaptations is that they must stand on their own, without relying on a viewer's familiarity with the source material.
In fact, a filmmaker's sensitivity with film form can be gauged by how well he or she molds non-cinematic elements into their cinematic counterparts while retaining the essence of the source -- its meaning and effect.
Everything Is Illuminated, however, is so badly adapted that the context for its grief, pain, even humor, feels hacked away.

Everything Is Illuminated (2005) movie review at Real Movie News
It is this same idea which is at the heart of Everything Is Illuminated, an oddball film which gives off the surreal fantasy feeling of a film like Amelie with the edition of Ali G style comedy.
Once the humor is gone, Illuminated flirts with melodramatics, never quite becoming unbelievable but also never fully able to make the situation as captivating as it is with humor.
It seems as though Everything is Illuminated is one of the rare situation in which a film would be better if it were less original.

The young actor, industry-savvy enough to know that he'll eternally be Frodo the Hobbit for millions upon millions of moviegoers, hits theaters in his first two leading roles since the conclusion of the "Lord of the Ring" trilogy.
Wood could have a dozen movies coming out in a single weekend and he'd still expect to hear questions about Middle Earth and wizards and orcs and rings and things.
"Illuminated," based on part of the novel by Jonathan Safran Foer and featuring Wood as a young American exploring his past in Eastern Europe, is the directorial debut of veteran character actor Liev Schreiber.

Movie Review: Everything Is Illuminated - /FILM
A sweet yet powerful little Indie film, Everything is Illuminated scores high praise for originality, charm and humor.
Written for the screen and directed by first-timer Liev Schrieber, the film shows a lot of love for, attention to and craftsmanship of the novel of the same name by Jonathan Safran Foer, a novel a friend has now deemed as one of the best ever and one I now must read.
Everything about the film is illuminated with love by Schreiber, who obviously cares for the novel as my friend does, taking pains to create for us a beautiful world with realistic characters.

Everything Is Illuminated - London Movie Review
Everything is Illuminated is the directorial debut by actor Liev Schreiber, who adapted his own screenplay from the best-selling novel by 20-something author Jonathan Safran Foer.
Though the film was mostly shot in Prague, Schreiber uses several authentic locations for the Odessa sequences that add considerably to the film – notably the visually stunning Odessa station.
In short, Everything Is Illuminated is an enjoyable adaptation that will please fans of the novel as well as inspiring a few new ones in its own right.

Everything Is Illuminated | Movie Review | Entertainment Weekly
Lisa Schwarzbaum is a film critic for EW Elijah Wood's night-creature eyes, magnified by the thick lenses of old-man eyeglasses, convey a lot about the cracked intensity of the young man called Jonathan Safran Foer in Everything Is Illuminated.
That such a comically somber investigator of his own family's old-country roots carries the same name as the author of the acclaimed novel on which this loving adaptation is based is just one of the book's meta flourishes enthusiastically embraced by first-time feature filmmaker Liev Schreiber.
For one of those obstreperously original books that are themselves impossible to translate, Everything Is Illuminated is impressively well lit.
