Everything2 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Everything2 solicits donations and states that the accumulated funds are earmarked for bandwidth and colocation costs, but does not disclose the specific details of how these donations are spent.
Although Everything2 does not seek to become an encyclopedia (even though the contents of Webster's 1913 dictionary have been assimilated into the database), a substantial amount of factual content has been submitted to Everything2.
Everything2 is not a wiki, and there is no direct way for non-content editors to make corrections or amendments to another author's article.

This resulted in Everything2 being offline from roughly November 6 to December 9th 2003.
Everything2 is now hosted by the University of Michigan.
Policy is that "Everything2 is not a bulletin board".

 CNN.com - Technology - The next generation of online encyclopedias - November 21, 2000
And Everything2, the brainchild of Slashdot co-founder Nathan Oostendorp, strokes the egos of its contributors so they'll build an uncensored database of general knowledge.
And Everything2 is hoping the encyclopedia will serve as marketing tool for the software they developed to build the site.
In fact, Oostendorp professes a worry that is utterly contrary to the original, utopian plan of Everything2: The very contributors he hoped to attract are becoming a liability.

Everything2 at opensource encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-19)
Everything2 is privately owned, and though the long-term users of Everything2 view it as a collaborative work-in-progress, the owners do not usually consult Everything2's user base prior to policy decisions.
Everything2 is accumulating a substantial body of good material that is subjective or non-factual.
On a contentious issue it is possible, even encouraged, for Everything2 to have several articles (writeups) under the same title (node), by different authors, presenting different points of view.

 Best of my E2 Writings
Everything2 users quickly figured out they could add soft links as a form of commentary on the entry or the author.
Worse, some editors began to turn Everything2 into a dumping ground for their short stories, poems, and literary "experiments" while at the same time deleting the entries of the "lowly" users who mistakenly thought they could emulate the behavior of the editors.
After contributing about 1,300 entries to Everything2, I grew tired of the pettiness and uneven application of editorial control and left.

 Meatball Wiki: EverythingTwo
Everything2 is similar to a wiki with FreeLinking BracketedLinks in that it is a pretty random collection of user-generated nodes that are interlinked using special syntax.
It is different in that the structure of the text is more free (ala RawHtmlWiki) whereas WikiSyntax is very constrained, and the trust model is based on more HardSecurity like voting and rating, whereas a wiki uses more SoftSecurity.
Everything2 is also interesting in that it has vigilantes actively seeking out copyright violators and reporting them.

The article on the Deviant art web site in the SFA forum made me think of a really good site for those that like to and/or have to write.
Everything2 is basically a huge user-created encyclopedia to which you can contribute.
For example, if you know a lot about cars or video games or drugs or colors or music you can write about it and add it to their database.

However, the Everything2 userbase's true ingenuities are seen in the usually-worthless entries.

The query execution time for the database is another important bottleneck, as all of the web servers can lock up very quickly if they don't get a response from the database, a user may then re-send their HTTP request, which only compounds the problem of a bogged server.
A typical pageload on Everything2 (viewing a node), uses mostly primary key lookups (the fastest possible select) as well as indexed lookups.
Ordered selects are used for the "other users" and "chatterbox" nodelets, however, but only on tables which are at maximum several hundred records, which has a negligible sorting time.

This first bit of text is also used in the title attribute of the A tag, but I can't figure out how to grab that first bit AGAIN without the +'s.
