EvgenyMikhailovichLifshitz (; February 21 1915 – October 29 1985) was a leading Soviet physicist.
Lifshitz is well known in general relativity for coauthoring the BKL conjecture concerning the nature of a generic curvature singularity.
With Lev Landau, Lifshitz co-authored an ambitious series of physics textbooks, in which the two aimed to provide a graduate-level introduction to the entire field of physics.
Lifshitz is perhaps best remembered for his ten volume Course of Theoretical Physics written jointly with Lev Landau.
Lifshitz continued to work on the book after Lev Landau's death and it was not completed until 1979.
The work includes many of the results of Lifshitz's research over many years including in particular the results of many research papers written jointly with Lev Landau.
