Evil Empire is the second album by Rage Against the Machine.
It was released on April 15, 1996, almost four years after the band's first, self-titled album.
The album's title is taken from the phrase evil empire, which was used by former U.S. President Ronald Reagan and many Western conservatives in describing the former Soviet Union.

IDN Bands: Brethren and the Evil Empire
Their debut self-titled album, "Brethren and the Evil Empire", was released in 2002.
Their second album, "The Plastic Factory" retains the dark and emotional style of "Brethren and the Evil Empire", but it is a sleeker presentation with a more personal feeling.
Brethren and the Evil Empire -the album - explores the life of its protagonist through songs that run the gamut from late '60s garage rock to Floyd-influenced psychedelia, from all-out thrash to acoustic balladry.

 Evil empire
The term evil empire was applied to the Soviet Union by U.S. President Ronald Reagan during the latter stages of the Cold War.
Some writers consider the term a reference to the Star Wars series of movies, which pitted the Rebel Alliance against the Empire of the evil Darth Vader.

Evil Empire is what I like to consider the middle child of all Rage, in terms of while-a-band Rage-penned albums Though they did release a fourth album, it was after they broke up, its all covers anyway, so there's no legitimate rage to it.
The third album, "Battle of Los Angeles," seems focused on creating the coolest, weirdest sounds possible, and Zach only being mad because he's supposed to be- while I like that album (for the most part), there doesn't seem to be as much emotion in it as in all of their other material.
The album's first notes are light on People of the Sun, but it really sounds like a return album, de la Rocha saying a few words during Morello's simple guitar, rapping for a bit, and then with the chorus kicking in powerfully, It's coming back around again.

This album feels to have too much anger and violence about it, and Rage seem to have forgotten that they should concentrate on the music and what they're good at.
Evil Empire has been criticised by many as poor when compared with the supremely awesome debut album "Rage Against the Machine".I can see where these criticisms come from as EE is a totally different kettle of fish.
On a musical level, I think this album is fantastic but the lyrical messages are a virtual smack in the face for the US government and other commitees that stand in the way of Rages quest for equality, liberty and freedom.

Their previous album was a bleak disc with complex yet minimalist songs that screamed from isolation and loss.
Here, they play the same sort of songs, all lonely and moody and screaming and sobbing, yet at the end (and a few places in between) a crack of sunshine breaks through the clouds, and it seems as if all is not lost with the world they describe.
The album opens with A Quiet White Cut by the Longest Blue Shadows, a long tune that begins slowly with a lightly tinking ride cymbal, ominous piano, and half-heard voice.

All in all, "Evil Empire" is a great album, but I suggest checking out Rage's debut first, an album that is more focused lyrically and musically than any other album in Rage's catalog.
While yes Evil Empire is not the album the debut was it is still a first rate album, drawing more influences and meaning and feeling behind the music then before, which in some cases can be a very bad thing but here is nice and it works wonderfuly.
So like I stated, Evil Empire is not the bands best album but it is however far from being a bad album by any means.

Upon the arrival of Evil Empire, four years had passed since the release of Rage Against the Machine's stereotype-shattering debut.
Repetitiveness and formula plague parts of the album, but the musicians work in unison on cuts like "Vietnow." A rocking symbol of the Rage sound, "Vietnow" stands out as the highlight of the album because of the band's tight playing.

As the vitriol spewed from Evil Empire, Rage Against the Machine's long-awaited follow up to their 1993 debut owes much to Chuck D.'s polemic fury and rapid-fire urgency--though as always the band rages without hip-hop machinery in favor of the heavy-duty power tools of rock.
But no matter if Rage against the Machine amounts to revolutionary rap, protest metal, or a combination of the two, the band's command of sonic rage makes Evil Empire a powerful assault in any musical language.

Sophomore albums can be tricky, but the band only goes through a sophomore slump if their debut was a success.
This was the case with Rage Against the Machine; their self-entitled, 1992 debut was a great one, so Rage had to be careful when it came time to write the new album.

Rage Against the Machine have jacked up the sociopolitical siege mentality in their metallic hip-hop to such a dogmatic degree – and honed their sound to such maniacally shrill perfection – that the band and the roaring joys of its harangue 'n' roll seem virtually sexless.
Evil Empire is so focused in agenda and attack that its Armageddon-just-around-the-corner dynamics are a welcome change from the milksop discontent of the average Buzz Bin band.
Zack De La Rocha raps with impressive underdog passion (if limited range and tonality), and Tom Morello's guitar speaks in tongues; at one point in "Bulls on Parade," Morello simulates the corrosive screech of turntable scratching with astonishing precision.
