Evil Under the Sun - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Evil Under the Sun (published in 1941) is a mystery novel by Agatha Christie featuring Hercule Poirot.
The plot is close to, although not exactly the same as, the short story “Triangle at Rhodes” that was published in Murder in the Mews.
In the 1982 film, the setting is moved to a secluded resort frequented by the rich and famous in the Adriatic Sea (the action was in fact filmed in Majorca, Spain).

THE CINEMA LASER DVD REVIEW-- EVIL UNDER THE SUN
There is plenty of sharp, witty dialogue strew about in EVIL UNDER THE SUN, which is something that the all-star cast sinks their teeth into with glee.
Many of the guests are on the flamboyant side, but none makes a bigger splash than noted stage actress Arlena Marshall (Diana Rigg), who arrives with her rich husband, and a none too cleverly concealed boyfriend in tow.
Of course, everyone has an airtight alibi to prove that they were nowhere near Arlena at the time of her death, but this doesn't stop Poirot from putting his "little gray cells" to work, so that he can unmask the killer.

This EVIL UNDER THE SUN may lack the sumptuous, big-budget feel of Peter Ustinov's previous "Hercule Poirot" movie, DEATH ON THE NILE, but it does feature a tautly written screenplay (again by playwright Anthony Shaffer) and dazzling location views of the Spanish coast.
The one flaw is that all the humor, glitz and wit detract a little from the dark atmosphere one expects from a murder mystery.
EVIL UNDER THE SUN contains perhaps the campiest dialogue and most over-the-top performances of the four sparkling, big budget adaptations of Agatha Christie mysteries (ORIENT EXPRESS, NILE, MIRROR, and this one) made by the same producers.

Evil Under the Sun DVD review on AudioRevolution.com
Eventually, Ustinov played Poirot in a few lackluster TV movies (unlike the features, they were set in the present), and all was silent until the so amiable Suchet brought back one of fiction's most colorful, amusing sleuths, he of the magnificent moustaches and the little gray cells.
'Evil Under the Sun' is a very quiet movie -- even the murder is accomplished by silent strangulation -- but that doesn't mean the sound team didn't work wonders.
Movies about a spot of murder can be great, satisfying fun, and though 'Evil Under the Sun' is a bit lethargically paced, it's also very entertaining, graced by a great look and a terrific cast.

Too soon, however, their lives are shattered by suspicion and social pressure in its most evil form.
Evil wears many complex faces: the depredations of war in the title story; bloody revolution in "Search My Mind"; Tamil-Sinhala ethnic hostility in "Quail's Nest"; the degradation of forest into battlefield in "Sanctuary"; physical, emotional, and spiritual severance in "The Crossing"; a boundary between neighbours in "The Wall"; and the ravages of disinheritance in "Samsara".
Arasanayagam is as skilled at bringing genial, small-town speculation to life in a story like "The Wall" as she is at making a contemplative internal piece like "The Crossing" relevant to any reader from any cultural context.

Set at an English seaside summer resort, EVIL UNDER THE SUN is one of several Hercule Poirot mysteries involving a "love triangle" that is not quite what it appears to be (DEATH ON THE NILE is another and the most famous).
In EVIL UNDER THE SUN, beautiful but brainless Arlena Marshall is strangled on a beach, and the most obvious suspect appears to be Captain Marshall, her husband, who was jealous of her relationship with young, handsome Patrick Redfern.
Two bits of trivia: EVIL UNDER THE SUN was filmed in 1982, with Peter Ustinov as Poirot, and the more recent TV adaptation of "Triangle at Rhodes" - another "love triangle" story - starring David Suchet as Poirot, borrows some dialogue from EVIL UNDER THE SUN.
