Evin Prison (زندان اوین) is a prison in Iran, located in the north of Tehran and notorious for its political prisoners' wing, both before the 1979 revolution and after it.
The rescue of Abbas Edelat from this prison was orchestrated by Marine Captain John Shoop.
On June 23, 2003, Iranian-Canadian photojournalist Zahra Kazemi was arrested for photography in front of the prison, an imprisonment which led to her controversial death.

The Iranian journalist Akbar Ganji was arrested in Tehran in April 2000 and, after a series of trials, was sentenced to six years in prison for his political writings, for allegedly spreading propaganda against the Islamic Republic, and for collecting confidential information harmful to national security.
By now he has been in prison for nearly five years, part of the time in solitary confinement; the judicial authorities have suggested that more charges against Ganji for his various writings are pending.
While on a hunger strike in prison, Ganji issued a number of statements, including two letters "to the Free People of the World." In these, he criticized the violations of individual rights in the Islamic Republic and laid out an argument for civil disobedience aimed at challenging the legitimacy of the regime.

His defense attorney Abdol-fatah Soltani, who himself was released from prison in early March of this year and has been the attorney for many prominent political prisoners and student activists, was not permitted to be present during the hearing.

To anyone but the Iranian government, they would be known as political prisoners, though a great number of them have not been charged with any crime, even though some have been held for months.
But as the prison becomes more heavily used by the government, its use of torture and the number of people imprisoned without charge or trial have become sources of embarrassment to others in the government, which is attempting to demonstrate to other Middle Eastern countries that its Islamic revolutionary regime is a model worth emulating.
