Evolution (Journey album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Journey's fifth studio album, Evolution, was released in April of 1979 on the Columbia Records label.
Journey continued its streamlined approach to songwriting and the result would be their highest charting album yet.
The album featured their first top 20 hit in "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'", which is still featured prominently in the current tours, even being used often as the encore.

Journey’s initial style was progressive jazz-rock, complete with extended and improvised solo spots, a style much in evidence on their first three albums for Columbia Records.
Journey’s drummer, Aynsley Dunbar, was unhappy with this new style and left for Jefferson Starship, to be replaced by legendary drummer Steve Smith.
For Journey, transformation and renewal are an integral part of the creative force that has led the band on their remarkable "journey".

With the platinum triumph of Infinity still ringing in their ears like coins in a slot machine, Journey was now committed to completing their transformation from jazz fusion/prog rock mavens into arena rock superstars with their fifth album, 1979's Evolution.
If Infinity had defined a new songwriting formula for the act, Evolution only served to develop it and streamlined it further, clearly qualifying as their strongest effort to date and endearing the band to millions of FM rock listeners in the process.
Evolution quickly became the band's biggest-selling album (moving over 800,000 units in less than three months), and Perry and co. soon embarked on yet another mammoth tour, which set many an attendance record, and set the stage for even greater triumph with 1980's Departure.

Still, for all the album’s adventurous strengths, Journey are at their best as a highly commercial, supremely melodic pop rock band, and on the whole these songs simply aren’t as memorable as those on the preceding two albums.
Anyway, this album is a bit mellower than most Journey albums, and Cain's dated, tinkly keyboards are still a hindrance (by and large Journey's keyboards sound like their colorful album covers look).
Although Journey were album oriented artists (the cream of the crop being 1981’s Escape), their albums were generally highlighted by their singles, and as such this 2-cd retrospective should contain all the music that most non-hardcore Journey fans will need.

Journey's latest Arrival, their first offering without Steve Perry since he joined the band in 1977, stands more as a tribute to the song-writing skills of Jonathan Cain and Neal Schon than an exploration of the talents of the new frontman, Steve Augeri.
Unlike longtime Journey drummer Steve Smith, whose passion has always been for Jazz, or Steve Perry, who was influenced primarily by the Motown sound of the 1960s, Schon has always appeared to thrive in exactly the same musical style that made him famous: loud hard rock.
