  Evolution [Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy]
The idea of evolution was not particularly dominant in patristic and scholastic theology and philosophy, both on account of the dualism which runs through them as an echo of Plato and Aristotle, and on account of the generally accepted Christian theory of creation.
With Heraclitus evolution meant the return of all things into the primal principle followed by a new world-development; with Hegel it was an eternal process of thought, giving no answer to the question as to the end of historical development.
The individual processes of the world of phenomena are classed under the head of evolution, or extension of movement, with which integration of matter, union into a single whole, is connected, and dissolution or absorption of movement, which includes disintegration of matter, the breaking of connection.

The latter contributed to philosophy the conception of nature as a mechanical system; Darwin contributed the conception of evolution and, owing largely to his influence, biological ideas gained greater prominence than mathematical in philosophical construction.
His essays show, even by their titles, that he was working towards a theory of evolution before he had any knowledge of Darwin’s researches, the results of which were still unpublished.
And, like all the exponents of the ethics of evolution who have followed him, he does not distinguish clearly between the historical process explained by the law of evolution and the ground of its authority for conduct—if such authority be claimed for it.

 Teaching Evolution? - Philosophy Forum
By all means, teach evolution, and the scientific method generally, as a belief that some people have; present the evidence and test for understanding of it; but don't require people to accept it.
Whether evolution is one of those or not would be a matter for debate, but as it is rather central to modern bioscience, it could certainly be argued that it is.
At least for Catholics, the Theory of Evolution is completely compatible with their doctrine (they believe that all animals, including humans, evolved through natural laws, and that in some point in our evolution God breathed a soul into mankind).

In this broad synthetic discussion of the evolution of philosophy, the author develops a metatheoretical analysis of macrophilosophy.
The author uses a novel analysis of the general theory of evolution as applied not only to biological systems but economic (and political) systems to recognize some important insights which are then applied to the ideas of the competition between, and progress of, philosophical theory in order to reveal the evolution of philosophy.
Finally, in the last chapter, these insights of the evolution of philosophy are applied to the social realm with interesting descriptive realizations.

 Evolution and Philosophy
Philosophy is, to put it simply, a system of fundamental principles and concepts that form the framework for future inquiry.
Almost every philosophy has contained declarations of certain basic assumptions: some philosophies argue that the world is fundamentally mysterious and unknowable; others state that the world can be known through peaceful contemplation; still others maintain that the world can be analyzed through systematic inquiry.
Though philosophy as an area of study has acquired a bad reputation in the modern world as being removed from reality, the answer to this question is: everyone.

Challenging the Naturalistic Philosophy of Evolution
Hypotheses and stories of human evolution frequently arise unprompted by data and contain a large measure of general preconceptions, and the data which do exist are often insufficient to falsify or even substantiate them.
Less than ten percent of the American population embraces evolution as taught by most scientists, while the rest of the nation is evenly divided between creationism and theistic evolution (Johnson 10).
Hard data brought forth in support of evolution is of a forensic nature and is interpreted in accordance with those presuppositions.

Finally there is human evolution and the rise of thought or cognition (Vernadsky, Teilhard), and a further leap in complexity and the interior life or consciousness (Teilhard), resulting in the birth of the Noosphere (Vernadsky, Teilhard).
For Teilhard there is a further stage, one of spiritual evolution, the Christing of the collective noosphere, in which humanity converges in a single divinisation he calls the Omega Point.
The evolution is the progressive development from the first inconscience in matter into life (movement, sensation, etc. and living physical beings), to mind (in conscious being, animals, including the human, the self-conscious thinking animal), to spiritualized mind, culminating in Supermind, Truth Consciousness (as supramental individuals, leading to a supramental, i.e.

Considered strictly as a scientific theory, evolution starts with the hypothesis or conjecture that higher forms of life have developed from lower forms over a period of millions of years.
Since, however, the cultural elite of today have a strong bent towards atheism or at least agnosticism, they push the theory of evolution as a proof that the world has not been created by God and that man is simply a higher animal without an immortal soul.

Evolution of Ethics attempts to construct a conceptual bridge between biology and human behavior by examining the cultural and biological feedback system that inspires the evolution of social rules.
Social evolution in this light acts as an extension of the same biological processes observed in lower organisms where it appears that tight hierarchical organization and efficient survival strategies further the life of many types of organisms.

This is partly due to the fact that science and philosophy only separated about the time evolutionary theories were being first proposed, but also because - especially in the Darwinian context - evolution was opposed to many cherished philosophical doctrines.
More recently, criticisms have rested on the notion of science itself, that evolution fails to meet the standards of true science, views that also were expressed at the time of Darwin and earlier.
My conclusion is that evolution, especially the modern theories, is science at its best, and when it and the nature of science are considered realistically, evolution is not lacking from a philosophical perspective.
