The Evolution Control Committee - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An experimental music band from Columbus, Ohio founded by Mark Gunderson in the 1980s, The Evolution Control Committee (ECC) typically uses uncleared and illegal samples from various sources as a form of protest against copyright law.
The ECC also produces numerous audio experiments, often involving the disfiguring of compact discs, and has produced a few video works as well, ranging from re-edited 50's corporate shorts to a Teddy Ruxpin reciting the works of William S. Burroughs.
The ECC is probably best known for its song "Rocked by Rape", consisting of samples of Dan Rather's deadpan delivery describing various atrocities over looped riffs from AC/DC's "Back in Black".

Evolution Control Committee is one of the stage names of Mark Gunderson, a musician, performance artist, digital manipulator and provocateur who has also performed as part of The Weird Love Makers, The Mood Swingers, Gaga, Mellodeath and DJ Pantshead.
Evolution Control Committee is the longest-lived of Gunderson's many projects, having started in the early nineties as a tape manipulation project.
Still, during the last half of the nineties, Evolution Control Committee released a video called The Television Will Not Be Revolutionized, a specially-edited subliminal cassette that was either motivational or demotivational depending on which side you played, the Compact Discstructions cassette and the first ECC CD release Double the Phat and Still Tasteless.

The ECC are humorous, mischievous subversives, an artistic breed with methodologies reminiscent of Tzara, but working less as a signboard of abstraction than as an abstractor of modern media.
I asked Mark if the ECC were concerned about the fact that they may indeed be reproducing precisely the problem which they seek to fight: "This is a tricky issue, very tricky," he answered.

Evolution Control Committee: Plagiarhythm Nation 2.0: Pitchfork Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Mark Gunderson (aka Evolution Control Committee) sidestepped the near-twee self-absorption that led to shit like Len by actually using samples, as opposed to cloaking and co-opting their melodies.
When collage artists tweak the EQ on their samples or pitch-shift them, whatever the source material, it becomes a component in a new proposition, a "song." In colliding samples as found, Gunderson posits a collage of ideas, but with more humor and levity than the strictly legal middle finger of Plunderphonics.
Plagiarhythm Nation, however fresh it sounds to new ears, is a damaged twelfth-generation dub of the real Evolution Control Committee, a mess of slight, insignificant and generally unfunny bits that I doubt even entertain Gunderson on sober reflection.

One of the peculiar characteristics of musical plagiarism is to have a common goal, to protest against the absurdity of endless copyright enforcing, and at the same time a wide variety of strategies and forms.
With the catchy slogan 'Copyright violation for the nation', the Evolution Control Committee is one of the plagiarist bands which have best interpreted the unlimited use of sound samples.
The group, headed by Mark Gunderson, is from Columbus, Ohio, and has been in the scene for twenty years, producing everything from subliminal audiotapes to cause unpleasant effects to a manual of techniques to damage a compact disc.

Splendid Magazine reviews The Evolution Control Committee: Plagiarhythm Nation
ECC has close ties to those other infamous copyright-ignorers, but while the two groups' styles are similar, ECC's style and whacked-out presentation (live performances involve one group member manipulating an instrument called a Thimbletron, consisting of thimbles on wires that play samples on cue) more than allow them to carve out a unique niche.
Unfortunately, ECC sometimes seem to think that their ideas are a bit more interesting than they actually are.
On the other hand, ECC's total deconstruction of such disposable crap as "Rhythm Nation" and "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You" borders on brilliant; the aptly named "Arrhythmia" songs strip away the very element that gave those pop trifles their names.

At issue are the competing interests of CBS and its claimed intellectual property rights versus the ECC and its claimed fair use protections -- the latter of which the Supreme Court recently ruled includes parody.
