Evreux is the seat of a prefect, a court of assizes, of tribunals of first instance and commerce, a chamber of commerce and a board of trade arbitrators, and has a branch of the Bank of France, a lyce and training colleges for teachers.
The first family of the counts of Evreux which is known was descended from an illegitimate son of Richard I., duke of Normandy, and became extinct in the male line with the death of Count William in 1118.
Philip of Evreux, son of Louis, became king of Navarre by his marriage with Jeanne, daughter of Louis the Headstrong (Hutin), and their son Charles the Bad and their grandson Charles the Noble were also kings of Navarre.

It is certain that in the time of Charles the Bald (ninth century) St. Taurinus was held in high esteem at Evreux; still earlier, Bishop Landulphus, who seems to have occupied the See of Evreux at the beginning of the seventh century, had built the basilica in his honour.
The cathedral of Evreux is one of the oldest in France; its octagonal dome was built at Cardinal Balue's expense; the church of Gisors has fine sculptures, among them a statue by Jean Goujon.

A memorial was dedicated during ceremonies at the air base to the US military servicemen based at Evreux who lost their life in service to their country.
The Veterans Open House at Evreux Air Base was a huge success and the 125 veterans and their families that made the trip received red carpet treatment by the French Air Force.
Several hundred people were present for the ceremony to include dignitaries from the City of Evreux, the French Air Force, the American Embassy in Paris and US Air Force Cadets from the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.

The city was badly damaged during the air raids of 1940 (when Evreux burned for a week) and 1944.
