Evzones - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Evzones in Athens gaurding the grave of the Unknown soldier.
The first Evzones unit was formed in 1868 as the royal guard (Ευζώνη—Evzone—, literally "Well-Girt," an ancient Greek phrase dating to Homer), and continued its role after the abolition of the Greek monarchy.
At their height, the evzones comprised five regiments and were considered the elite of the Hellenic Army.

The Evzone uniform, as we know it today, was worn by men-at-arms and klephts during the Turkish occupation of Greece (1453-1821), as may be seen in paintings from this period.
After the Revolution of 1821 the uniform of the Evzone was officially established as the uniform of all chieftains and fighters of the Revolution.

The Evzones have represented the elite of the Greek army since the long war of independence from the Ottoman Empire (1821-32).
Our Evzones are based on a number of picture sources for the late 19th Century, including a particularly useful picture from the Illustrated London News.
We were, of course, tempted to design these figures in full traditional Evzone garb, complete with the Foustanella, but this would have been more appropriate for the earlier wars of independence, and we realised most gamers would find the field uniform more useful for this later period.

Some male spectators, too, want to pose beside an Evzone, perhaps inspired by the supervisor, a colleague who takes care of the two soldiers and gets really close to them, when adjusting their clothes and repeatedly running their long cap tassels through his hands, while whispering encouraging words in their ears.
However, the Evzones have a surprise: the full dress uniform sported on special occasions, like the grand changing of the guard on Sundays at 11 o'clock.
The spectacular parade starts from the Evzone camp in the street of Irodou Attikou behind the Parliament, moves through Vasilissis Sofias towards Syntagma Square; first the marching band in white jackets and then the entire Presidential Guard in time with the drumbeats.
