Mrs Ewa Hedvkist Petersen is a Swedish MEP with a particular interest in road safety.

She explicitly asked for ECF and ETRA's assistance in amending the proposal for the new Directive on safer car fronts which will probably be submitted to the EP next Spring.

This renewed ACEM commitment to the European Road Safety Charter was also part of the message delivered by the 3rd ACEM Annual Conference "Improving Motorcycling Safety: a Shared Responsibility", held on the 21st November at the Residence Palace in Brussels.

Hélène Goudin from the EU critical party "Junilistan" and Ewa Hedkvist Petersen from the Social Democratic Party, will have their respectively first and second term in the parliament.
Goudin believes all regional subsidies should be granted by the national parliaments and will work independently of the parliamentarian party blocks.
Petersen on the other hand says Europe jointly has to cope with regional challenges and will work closely with the Social Democratic faction.

 Mid-term review of the White Paper on Transport Policy
Paolo Costa MEP, Chairman of the Transport Committee of the European Parliament, underlined the importance of recognising in transport policy the contribution that motorcycles and scooters make, in particular in urban environments, in order to achieve a better mobility for all citizens.
Ewa Hedkvist Petersen MEP, rapporteur for the mid-term review of the road safety action programme, supported that improvements in road safety could be reached through shared responsibility and better road infrastructure.
Helmuth Markov MEP, shadow rapporteur on the 3rd Driving Licence Directive, also brought his support calling for the recognition of the needs of motorcyclists in road safety and for a balanced and fair access to motorcycles and scooters, enabling them to fully play their role in the transport system.

The importance of signing the MNEPR agreement was raised early on in the EU-Russia meeting.
In fact, the debate was started by a Swedish MEP from the Party of European Socialists, Ewa Hedkvist Petersen, whom emphasised the need for Russia to sign the MNEPR agreement as soon as possible so that problems caused by radioactive waste can be tackled, which she addedd “are consequences of the Cold War”.
The conclusion of MNEPR is required to enable foreign partners to implement nuclear projects and would grant them a legal framework to carry out the work in Russia.

The text also aims to prevent so-called "driving licence tourism" whereby individuals pursued for driving licence offences in one member state escape sanctions by applying for a new licence in another member state.
MEPs also supported a report by Ewa Hedkvist Petersen MEP to phase out the rigid bull bars used to protect the front of four-wheel drive vehicles, which are considered dangerous for pedestrians and cyclists. 
The text, if approved by Parliament's plenary, will take effect on 1 January 2007.  The measures will save hundreds of lives a year in the EU, according to the rapporteur, although they have been softened to incorporate the views of those arguing in favour of bull bars.

On 18 January 2001 the European Parliament adopted a resolution, by 313 votes to 135 with 51 abstentions, calling for new measures to be taken to promote road safety in the light of 42.000 deaths and 1.7 million injuries in the EU every year.
The report on the Commission communication on 'Priorities in EU Road safety' was prepared by Ewa HEDKVIST PETERSEN (PES, S).
The resolution recommends improved safety equipment in cars, in particular less harmful bumpers, the fitting of speed limiters on goods' vehicles above 3.5 tonnes, support for the European New Car Programme and seatbelt campaigns, better road signs and eliminating fl spots.

Parliament's Transport Committee voted on January 19 to adopt the report by road safety expert Ewa Hedkvist Petersen (PES, Sweden) on the European Commissions 2003 proposed Directive (COM(2003) 586).
The proposal includes standards that must be met by the automobile industry regarding both frontal protection systems originally fitted to vehicles and systems placed on the market as separate technical units.

The issue is in fact a fairly serious problem across the EU – according to the ETSC 25% of offences in ‘transit countries’ such as France are committed by drivers who live in another member state.
The idea of an EU scheme is backed by Ewa Hedkvist-Petersen (Swedish Socialist), road safety rapporteur for the European Parliament’s Transport Committee, who believes EU rules are the best way to stop motorists from thinking they can break traffic regulations when travelling abroad.
The European Commission has also previously indicated its openness to the idea.
