 The Name
Ewenny Priory was founded in 1141 by Maurice de Londres, Lord of Ogmore, as a small cell of Benedictine monks.
In 1536, Sir Edward Carne, the second son of Howel Carne, of Nash, was granted the lease of Ewenny Priory after the last Prior, Dompmus Thomas, and the remaining few monks were forced to leave the Priory.
Ewenny Priory remained in the posession of the Carne family and later the Nicholl-Carnes until the death of John Carne in 1741 when it was passed by marriage to the Turbervilles whose descendants still occupy the priory today.

The site appears to have been fortified from a very early stage, though this was probably for prestige rather than pure defence.
The austere eastern arm of the priory church, including the chancel and transepts, represents some of the finest surviving Norman work in Glamorgan.

The beautiful Priory and Church of Ewenny is the most complete and impressive Norman ecclesiastical building in Glamorgan and was immortalised by Turner.
It is close to Bridgend and visitors should follow the A48 from Cardiff, for several miles past Cowbridge looking for a left-hand turn with a signpost to Ewenny.

It was made very special indeed as the composer and her family had travelled from Northern Ireland to be at the performance.
Ewenny Priory is a wonderful venue for such an evening as the acoustics are magnificent and the setting is so harmonious that one cannot but enjoy the music.
Nibbles and wine at the interval and the opportunity to walk round the Priory grounds made a very pleasant evening, even more so, not only that but a packed house contributed to both Cancer Research and the Ewenny Screen Fund.
