Commander O’Kane has been called the Submarine Force’s most outstanding officer; he served as Executive Officer of the very successful WAHOO before taking command of TANG.
1945 - USS CUTTLEFISH (ex V-9/SC-5) (SS-171) decommissioned at Philadelphia Navy Yard, Philadelphia, PA.
The visit took Aviles throughout much of the groundbreaking vessel, which is the second of four ballistic-missile submarines (SSBN) to undergo conversion into the Navy’s latest conventional weapon, the guided-missile submarine (SSGN).

USS James Madison hits an unknown Russian Victor class attack sub in the North Sea.
As for the captain, neither of the skippers on the two boats that I served on were relieved of their commands because of the incidents.
Inquiries were held, and neither skipper was found to be at fault, even though the skipper of the 627 had the helm (they do drive, by the way) at the time of the incident.

I never served on an SSBN, although I did got to sea on one once, for the Alpha Sea Trials of USS Louisiana (SSBN 743), the last of the Ohio-class boats.
The advantage of serving on boomers seemed to be that you had a long-range schedule that they stuck to pretty closely; if someone called to see if you could attend a family reunion six months from now, you knew if you'd be at sea or not.
Although I've heard that "refit" periods between patrols for SSBNs can be pretty intense, boomers have an organization called Trident Refit Facility that does most of your major maintenance for you.

Yeah I get the point that these are not general issue stuff, I play enough "Battlefield: 1942" and "Battlefield:Vietnam" to have experience on the range problem, BF:V is really nasty because it has ground cover, so half the time you can't see the enemy even when the are within 10 metres.
His MO was two light shot loads for the close in work and then a full weight shot load for the folks running away.
He got a sub for the same reason Stennis got a carrier; "How big a check do you need admiral?" The RIVERS is a one-off vessel, she had no reduction gears and relied on a very long turbine as a result.

Through the primary efforts of our Command Master Chief, MTCM(SS) Robert Payne, we were able to acquire the sail of the USS Nathaniel Greene, SSBN 636, from Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.

Some, like ''USS George Washington (SSBN-598)'' were known throughout the fleet, the same for ''USS Lewis and Clark (SSBN-644)'' or ''USS James Madison (SSBN-627)'' and others.
Yet the ''Stimson'' was known as the 'hog only to her crew.
(The SSBN descriptions are particularly hideous) *-Chevaline- Check and correct in light of the new information located by Allen Thompson *-Polaris missile- is badly in need of cleanup, the Trident page is too, have not looked at the Poseidon page.
