HMS Caldwell (ex USS Hale), Between 1917 and 1920, Transferred to Britain in 1940.
The USS Hale II DD-642 was the destroyer my father, James Godwin served on while in the Navy.
The United States Navy submarine USS Nathan Hale (SSBN-623) was named in his honor.

 Venture Chronicles: (USS) San Francisco runs aground
THe only SSBN not named after a state is named after Henry M. Jackson, the last Senator from Washington state.
This honor was given to him after Rhode Island (the state) decided to pull it's sponsorship of an SSBN due to political pressure put on it by its residents.
Those ssbns not named for states are the original 41 for Freedom...these were men who stood for freedom.

One such instance occurred while the ballistic missile submarine USS Nathan Hale SSBN 623 was on deterrent patrol in 1985.
As a Lafayette Class SSBN, the Nathan Hale was equipped with a device known as the "towed array." The towed array was a fl steel box about the size of an automobile.
Both the first and second model receiver heels are marked in Chinese with the ex c eption of the serial numbers use Arabic numerals.

I never served on an SSBN, although I did got to sea on one once, for the Alpha Sea Trials of USS Louisiana (SSBN 743), the last of the Ohio-class boats.
The advantage of serving on boomers seemed to be that you had a long-range schedule that they stuck to pretty closely; if someone called to see if you could attend a family reunion six months from now, you knew if you'd be at sea or not.
Although I've heard that "refit" periods between patrols for SSBNs can be pretty intense, boomers have an organization called Trident Refit Facility that does most of your major maintenance for you.

I served aboard the USS Nathan Hale (SSBN 623-G) from Sep 75 to Apr 79 and found your photo gallery a happy walk down memory lane.
I was actually attached to the USS Benjamin Franklin SSBN 640(B) when she was in the Charleston Naval Shipyard.

In 1989, the USS PENNSYLVANIA (SSBN 735) was commissioned in New London, Connecticut.
After finishing Sub School in Groton CT and then ET A school and NavAids C school in Virginia Beach VA (Naval Guided Missile School, Dam Neck VA), reported to the Marshall in the shipyard in Vallejo CA in March of 1976.
Finally reported to USS Nathan Hale (SSBN-623) in PSNS.

We kept microfiche drawings for all SSBN parts and also maintained a complete controlled set of Reactor Plant Manuals.
Not because of laziness but there was just so much to be done that our division alone couldn't support it.
