Ex libris - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ex libris (Latin: from books) is a phrase often used in an ownership inscription or a bookplate, usually found on the inside of a book cover or on one of the first few pages.
Printed bookplates (the earliest surviving example is 15th century) typically include heraldry, a motto, and the name of the owner; but they may have no more than just a name or heraldic crest, or be far more elaborate.
The drawing in this ex libris might depict the place of origin of the original owner of the book (Emporion).

 Introduction to Ex Libris
In fact their origins are closely related, since the ex libris were born out of the need to identify the book's ownership.
Apart from the ex libris, printed on paper and pasted on the inside cover of the books, there were also the super libros or book stamp, usually of heraldic motive, stamped on the cover binding of the book and serving the same purpose.
In the late 1970's two more ex libris dated from the XVth and early XVIth centuries were found: those of the bishop Telamonius of Limberger (Switzerland) dated at 1498 and that of the Polish bishop Mathiedrevici Wladislaw, dated at 1516.

A good ex libris clearly identifies the owner with his name, initials, or the coat of arms of the family, or with the coat of arms and the name together.
In the early periods ex libris were exclusively heraldic, with a textual unit containing initials, later the full name, and a list of positions and ranks supplementing the coat of arms.
A special version is the 'super ex libris' or 'supralibros', that is, a stamp of the coat of arms with or without the name pressed in the leather cover of the book.

 Trends in the New Millenium
oming back to ex libris collecting and collectors, one cannot deny that there has been in the past four decades or so, a certain tendency for the mass creation of bookplates on behalf of collectors who want to have specimens for exchange with fellow collectors of high artistic and graphic quality.
Many collectors fond of the graphic arts, specially in northern and central European countries, tend to regard the ex libris as a mere form of graphic art at a small scale, easy to collect as far as space is concerned and also in economic terms, but totally dissociated from books.
Another crucial issue that deserves to be reflected upon is the poorness of studies published or undertaken about ex libris, its history, artistic tendencies, and monographs on Artists with academic and scientific quality [iii].
