Ex vivo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ex vivo (Latin: out of the living) means that which takes place outside an organism.
In science, ex vivo refers to experimentation done in or on living tissue in an artificial environment outside the organism.
Ex vivo studies are usually performed in vitro, although the use of these two words is not synonymous.

Ex vivo expansion with CD3/CD28 co-stimulation may provide clinically relevant numbers T cells available for adoptive immunotherapy that have also undergone partial maturation.
The second patient, a 7-year-old girl with SCD, was given 2/3 of the CB unit unmanipulated and 1/3 after ex vivo expansion.
The authors conclude that these preliminary results indicate that the expansion procedure is safe and able to ex vivo expand CB HPCs; the expanded cells seem to accelerate hematopoietic recovery and, for the first time, the authors demonstrated that these cells contribute to sustain hematopoietic recovery after CBT.

A 17% difference is noted between the in vivo and the ex vivo perfused states.
After minor modifications (changes in perfusate and pressure as suggested by histology) are applied, the ex vivo perfusion system is one method for obtaining the desired results in an accessible, ethical, and controlled manner.

This work investigates whether cytokine mRNA transcripts could be used to identify epitope-specific HLA-restricted memory T lymphocytes reactivity directly in fresh peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from viral-seropositive individuals in response to ex vivo antigen recall.
We could characterize cytokine expression kinetics that illustrated how cytokine mRNA levels could be used as ex vivo indicators of T cell reactivity.
This strategy will enhance the efficiency of the identification of viral epitopes independently of the individual HLA phenotype and could be used to follow the intensity of immune responses during disease progression or in response to in vivo antigen-specific immunization.
