The film Excalibur attempts to rectify this by having the Lady of the Lake only repair the sword after it is broken.

Ignore the fancier neighbors and from the outside Excalibur is pretty cool - giant colorful turrets, a moat, and even a (non-functioning) drawbridge.
The other "problem" I have with The Excalibur is strictly a demographic one and runs more to my personal taste than anything else I discuss here.
The Excalibur is not one of my favorite hotels but it isn't because there's anything expressly wrong with the place.

Still, the one maxim that I can’t argue with is, "A good movie is a good movie." Which brings us to "Excalibur." This telling of the legend of King Arthur has long been one of my favorite films, despite the fact that it’s a period piece.
It is based on "Le Morte d’Arthur" by Sir Thomas Mallory, which, as we learn on the audio commentary, was one of the first books to be published after The Bible.
The land is still without a king and brave knights fight for the opportunity to attempt to pull the sword from the stone.

EXCALIBUR is a great, great film that holds up very well after more than 20 years.
The film is wonderful on many, many levels, from Boorman's masterful direction and writing (along with Pallenberg, his screenwriter), to the cinematography, the armor and costumes, the sets and production design, and the acting (with a great cast too numerous to mention).

When you first see Excalibur rising from the lake you know you are in fro a great cinema graphic movie.
However, the performances from the likes of Helen Mirren, Nicol Williamson, Liam Neeson and Gabriel Byrne are ferocious, and even though Nigel Terry doesn't possess the heart of Arthur and Nicholas Clay is too wimpy a Lancelot, the film overall is a cavalcade of wonder and awe, with a wonderful musical score to boot.
I loved EXCALIBUR when it first appeared in 1981; now I like it for what Boorman tried to do, and coming out on top more often than not.
