 Patrick Stewart - Film Work
Filmed largely in Ireland amongst the mud and mist, Boorman's film is a treat to look at and is well worth seeking out either on video or the occasional TV run.
The film is a visually stunning adaptation of Frank Herbert's cult sci-fi novel, with a fine cast of leading UK and European actors and a haunting soundtrack, but ultimately it never quite succeeds in fully capturing the scope of the book.
Filmed in Vancouver, the film was something of a departure from the more intense roles of the past for Patrick, and it is clearly apparent he has a lot of fun with the role of the villain here.

 JOHN BOORMAN – IN INTERVIEW
The visual impact of the Excalibur location – the eerie green light, the spikes and twisted knots of the armor, the discolored faces peering through a layer of earth or woad – was of design and wildness warring, of one age struggling to be born from another, the civilized from the natural.
The scene to be filmed has the young boy Arthur, squire to his elder brother Sir Kay in the jousting, sent by his father, Sir Ector, to fetch Kay's sword, negligently left behind in their tent.
Boorman's earlier films are crammed with presaging hints of the Arthur legend: from the name itself popping up in a key role in Zardoz (Arthur Frayn, sage and wizard) to the quest motifs, the notion of "heroes" struggling toward a source of meaning and resolution in a world of flux in Point Blank and Deliverance.

Excalibur is a highly entertaining story, but also an advanced interpretation of the legend, a particular vision on myth in general.
Merlin brings Uther to the lake, where he receives the sword Excalibur, which is given to him by the Lady of the Lake, a hand rising from the water.
The meeting between Lancelot and Guinevere is filmed as an extremely innocent moment, their nakedness is pure rather than sexual and the lovers look like Adam and Eve in paradise before the fall of men.

The movie Excalibur, directed by John Boorman is almost three decades old but is remains perhaps the finest evocation of the Arthurian Legend.
When the film begins it is a gloomy, damp brooding world it reveals, a world that is not sanitized with nostalgia but is the dirty reality prevalent in the middle ages.
His Awareness is what wins through, of which Excalibur is but a symbol, an awareness that allows him to intuitively understand the grievances of this people and rectify them.

I firmly believe in judging a film according to the goals it sets for itself (provided that the goals themselves are not objectionable or somehow unworthy), in the context of when the film was released, and in the context of the period the story is set in.
While doing so, sometimes pieces of the film that were confusing or seemed superficial suddenly make sense, and sometimes the reverse is true, as things that I didn't pay much attention to suddenly stick out as problems.
The reverse approach, which is to start by intellectualizing the film first in order to reach a "correct" quantification of a film's value, is less interesting.

As much of the film was shot in the Irish countryside, Boorman and Thomson give us many shots that show awe-inspiring landscapes and lush green meadows, which can only contribute to the film’s beauty.
The film is presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.85:1.
The early part of the film was shot very darkly, and it is during this portion of the DVD that some artifacting and defects on the source print are evident.

The narrative of the aptly titled EXCALIBUR primarily follows the history of the legendary sword as it appears in the legend of King Arthur.
EXCALIBUR originated as the pet project of director John Boorman (ZARDOZ), and in a round about way it exists because of THE LORD OF THE RINGS.
Another weakness of the film is the pacing of last half.

 Arthurian Film
Donner's film, which was shelved by the studio for several years before being dumped for television release, is one of the silliest films ever made about the Arthurian legend.
The charges leveled against the film are generally that the lead roles were miscast, that the direction was ponderous, and that, at nearly three hours, the film was too long.
Clearly, Zucker intends his film to be an Arthuriad for the 1990s, but the film fails to capture the spirit of the original legend or to make a case for its contemporary translation of the oft-told story of the Arthur-Lancelot-Guinevere love triangle.

Opening with a combination of fl magic and war we see Merlin transform Uther into a döppelganger of his enemy in order that he might enter his enemy's castle and rape his wife; thus we have the conception of Arthur.
Set in the lush green scenery of Ireland this film balances the beautiful setting with the gritty `over-red' story of the Arthurian legend, based on `Morte d'Arthur'.
This is a film you will just have to see if only for the reason that you'll probably never see another like it.

Spirituality & Practice: Film Review: Excalibur, directed by John Boorman
Bits and pieces of the tale were woven into one of his early TV productions, "The Quarry." Three of Boorman's feature films, Point Blank, Leo the Last, and Deliverance, center around individuals trying to define their destiny in a wild world.
Excalibur easily moves beyond all the other screen treatments of this universal story and, thanks to a mesmerizing performance by Nicol Williamson as Merlin, it contains the humor, irony, and intelligence to make it a modern classic.
Eighteen years later, Arthur (Nigel Terry) miraculously pulls the enchanted sword Excalibur from the stone in which it was implanted at Uther's death.

Revealed during the filming of Excalibur, Boorman’s comment on the fundamental truth invested in myth provides a telling insight into both his understanding of the Arthurian legend and the inspiration behind the film.
The fatal flaw is dramatically exposed by the initial encounter with Lancelot du Lac, ‘Sire, your rage has unbalanced you.’ The strength and virility of the, ‘mightiest and fairest of knights,’ ought to displace the weakened authority of the ruler, as demonstrated by the Vegetation cults of Weston and the example of Uther.
Though the visual potential unique to film, along with the thematic suggestiveness of music, increase the film’s aesthetic maturity, it is the density of meaning imbued in myth that demonstrates Boorman’s true mastery.
