Manchester has the UK's largest gay population outside of London, and is renowned for its gay village; centred around the Canal Street area the gay village is home to various gay shops, restaurants, numerous bars and clubs, and each August bank holiday hosts the Manchester Pride Festival (previously known as Mardi Gras and Gayfest).
Manchester's gay culture was brought to mainstream attention in 1999 by the acclaimed and controversial Channel 4 drama series Queer as Folk, which portrayed life in the village.
Manchester is in the Central North Division of the Salvation Army.

Manchester City Council decided to open the new city centre to traffic after 6pm.
Let's go back down the escalator and walk out onto the square that's been over two years in the making, and was opened with much fanfare last week.
The other items occupying the square, such as the elliptoid uplighter lamps (which incidentally are too dim), and the inverted teardrop-shaped litter bins that look like Daleks redesigned for the late 90's, are pure ET/Millennium, and I'm sure in 10 years time they'll look very dated.

Piccadilly (see my Piccadilly 99 Newsletter page) is next on Manchester City Council's makeover list - they've approved their own plans for a new office building on the Portland Street end, with an outlandish and gimmicky landscaping plan on the rest of the site, and are hoping to start work this month.

A dramatic boulder-strewn rill within a major new urban space in Manchester, based upon a concept design by Martha Schwartz, the international landscape designer.
The 90 metre long rill follows the course of the original "Hanging Ditch" a mediaeval feature of central Manchester, traversing the new square and running down towards the River Irwell.
We were initially direct-employed by the client, Manchester City Council, as a specialist design consultant to work alongside architect Jim Chapman in developing the original concept design by Martha Schwartz into a buildable reality.

As part of the celebrations around the 20th birthday of Cornerhouse, Manchester based research company Morris Hargreaves MacIntyre were commissioned to assess the impact of Cornerhouse in the first 20 years of its' existence.
The Big Screen is a 25 square metre video screen erected by the BBC, in partnership with Philips, Manchester City Council and Milligans (owners of of the Triangle shopping centre).

Curtis' family said they had been touched by the response to the anniversary of his death and were proud that so many people had turned up at Exchange Square.
