Depeche Mode - Exciter | Album Review @ Music-Critic.com : the source for music reviews, interviews, articles, and ...
Forever pushing back boundaries, their album releases, though few and far between these days, have been memorable occasions and mark their adaption and musical evolution.
Exciter is a good, strong album, though in the Depeche Mode context it is easy to criticise it because the previous standards have been so high.
Even so, it is sure to add to the 50 million albums they have sold since 1981, and be a great pre-cursor to the tour they are due to embark upon later this year.

  Recensioni Exciter
Exciter is a bold move for Depeche Mode, who've finally extricated themselves from their six-year creative rut.
Exciter, its first studio outing in four years, is at once the earthiest and most futuristic song cycle the group has released yet, folding acoustic and electronic orchestration into gorgeous sonic landscapes.
EXCITER is a bonus to those who thought that maybe the pressures of creative change, fame, time and a madly fashionable world meant that Depeche's crazy journey into the night was over.

Someone like Anton Corbijn would have been sent this CD to give him an overall feel for the show.
It is compiled from album versions and live versions from previous releases.
This is probably an attempt to give the closest possible idea of how the actual show would be.

The production of this album is excellent, with subtle sounds, clever beats, and masterfully made arrangements, all of them made by synths or by computer, so you will be discovering new sounds each time you hear the album.
4.5 for outstanding albums, the only difference between 5 and 4.5, is that 4.5 don't need to be such great classics, but you can expect as much quality from those albums.
When the rest of the album suffered from being far too laidback (politely put), recording a song using a coma as a metaphor might be a little ill-advised.

When Exciter was declared the best Depeche Mode album since Violator, those who said so must have also forgotten about Songs of Faith and Devotion, in addition to having found a roundabout way of saying that it was merely better than Ultra.
This album is similar to their last two in that it needs a good few listens before everything settles in, and the listener can get their head around the mood, textures and direction.
Their last album, Exciter sounded as if the band couldn't be bothered with it and as a result a lot of the songs didn't sound complete.

 The Exciter Text
From their very first single release, Dreaming of Me, back in 1981, to their latest album Exciter, Depeche Mode have continued to plough a decidedly individual furrow, and along the way have given us, through the force of their words and music, some of those truly rare, memorable moments in pop.
So, on to the tenth Depeche Mode studio album, Exciter, which, on first hearing captures the band in full flight...slipping effortlessly from the bluesy electronica of Dream On to the heavy old school sound of The Dead of Night to the fifties torch beauty of Breathe.
Exciter continues that tradition and is an experience not to be missed.

Proof I think that for the majority of DM fans, this is an album we tend not to think about as it collects dust at the back of the CD rack, and this feeling has undoubtedly coloured the band's own judgement when compiling the tour.
The album is glossy and well-produced and very..chill.
"Exciter" is an album by a band who could have the world in the palm of their hands, but maybe they don't want to.

Depeche Mode : Exciter - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Arguably the first album made by the group as a cohesive unit since Violator (and bearing some resemblance to that record in overall title and song names -- compare "The Sweetest Condition" with "The Sweetest Perfection"), Exciter finds the trio again balancing pop catchiness with experimental depths.
As with Ultra, an outside producer helps focus the end results in new, intriguing directions -- in this case, said producer is Mark Bell, known for his work with Björk but also as part of Warp Records' flagship act LFO, which always acknowledged their own debut to Depeche.
If there are few storming arena-shaking numbers this time out, the exquisite delicacy throughout is addicting, with Gore's guitar providing slippery and stinging leads to the smoky, romantic flow of Exciter.

I got an Exciter t-shirt and made it to the front for the opening band, which was Bad Karma.
The stage lights were turned down and they started out with a tape of "Warcry", which is the intro to I forget which of their albums, (yeah I know, I'm a sucky fan!) Then they launched into "The Dark Command", which is of course the title track to their 1996 comeback special album.
The next song was from their latest album, Blood of Tyrants, and was "Rain of Terror", and then they played "Stand up and Fight", which is of course from the very first Exciter album, Heavy Metal Maniac.

I had been closely following the band's progress on the album work and feared for the future when Martin Gore (songwriter) made it very clear he was uninspired, even requiring record label pressure and the assistance of two friends to write the material.
This is the type of album that you listen through from beginning to end and sit back, look out at the twilight landscape and take it all in.
However, listening to the Exciter CD a few times straight convinces me that there is as much depth in the album as in any other of their albums.

While those people will wring their hands bemoaning the fact that DM has "gone soft", others will realize it is a collective exhale from a band who has earned the right to stand still for once and appreciate all the good things that life has to offer.
I have this album, yes, but if Martin writes like this for the next set, I will just have to be content to live with the earlier albums; if the next release has such banal lyrics and themes, I will not buy it.
This album surprised even the DM fans, and I was so happy when I listen to it for the first time.

Depeche Mode: album reviews and ratings
Perhaps due to the band's travails, 'Ultra' is the most experimental Mode album since 1983's 'A Broken Frame', when these same three fellows lost their leading songwriter, Vince Clarke, to Yaz (and subsequently Erasure).
While keeping the same dark and slow tempo mood of their preceding album, DM have chosen a more minimalist approach on Exciter where many layers of sound were stripped down in comparison to other DM releases, resulting in songs that emphasize on tunes and vocals.
"Following the rather disappointing 'Exciter', the mediocre solo releases of both Dave Gahan and Martin Gore in 2003, and Gahan's public statements as to his lack of interest in pursuing the band if he wasn't part of the songwriting process, many were skeptical whether DM can still pull off a decent album.

To say that the expectations on the new Depeche Mode album are colossal, must be the greatest understatement this year.
After over twenty years and 40 million album copies, the two former Basildon church choir boys and the ex car thief, know perfectly well how to write alternative handcraft pop for the masses.
Even though the album is somewhat different from the recent work, I get a feeling that the progress is leading back to the roots, just as much as it takes Depeche Mode to new heights.

We released a full version of the album in cassette format to the underground Metal movement (Europe). The first version was called "WWIII Heroes", later changed to "Heavy Metal Maniac" and released by Shrapnel.
A lot of the EXCITER fans thought it was sad you were the opener for Rage for the European tour, considering the status EXCITER gained in the eighties and that you had enough killer songs to play as a headliner.
When everybody thought EXCITER was dead and buried, the band returned in 1997, with a new line-up and a deal with Osmose Records, beginning with the release of the "Dark Command" album, that is brutal and sounds evil.

Fast Forward : CD Reviews: Depeche Mode - Exciter
The album's opener (and first single), "Dream On", is an appetizer for the rest of Exciter, its restrained acoustic guitar and syncopated handclaps giving a taste of the complexity and atmospherics of the rest of the album, due in no small part to producer Mark Bell's creative input.
Though by no means the best song on Exciter, "Dream On" is one of DM's better singles in years, and far better than the majority of songs that find their way to modern rock radio.
Despite these faults, Exciter is a very good album that should satisfy the most critical of DM aficionados and attract a new legion of fans.

But there is un mucho difference, I seriously doubt New Kids on the Block would ever have dared to sing about suicidal teenagers ("Blasphemous Rumors,") or SandM ("Master and Servant.") Depeche Mode's staying power comes from their anti-bubble gum pop attitude and a sexy sound you don't get tired of.
Exciter is kept together by the simple fact that Martin Gore has written songs about desire -its sexy seductive side and its more dramatic ball crushing side.
I think Exciter was written specifically for those nights when you've got someone over, the scented candles are flickering, the wine is flowing, and your hands know that you've got all night long together.

RTÉ.ie Entertainment: Depeche Mode - Exciter
The release of a double singles album the following year sounded like the last gasp of a dying band, especially in the wake of Dave Gahan's much-publicised overdoses and extended recovery from drug addiction.
They harken back to their industrial past with the Marilyn Manson/Nine Inch Nails-stomp 'The Dead of Night' but the ballads are where the real strengths lie on this album; sex, Mode-style on 'Comatose' ("Slipping in/And sliding out") and 'Freelove', which sounds like a throwback to the days of faith and devotion.
Not as ambitious as 'Music For The Masses', as coherent as 'Violator', or even as emotionally wracked as 'Songs of Faith', 'Exciter' may be uneven and patchy, but it is a grower.
