Excoriation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An excoriation is an erosion or destruction of the skin by mechanical insult like a scratch or abrasion of the skin.
It's commonly seen in other skin disorders causing itching/pruritis: dry skin, dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, scabies, etc. It can been a symptom of other illnesses like liver failure where pruritis is caused by increases of bilirubin.
For a patient to have neurotic excoriations they have to deny picking and scratching although in actuality are picking and scratching.

In contrast, as we previously described, native periderm maturation and resistance to excoriation (skinning) is accompanied by an increase in relatively un-esterifled and esterified homogalacturonan pectin epitopes in the walls of phellogen cells.
As is the case with native periderm, an immature wound periderm is susceptible to excoriation.
Excoriation of the wound periderm formed after a potato tuber is cut for seed can lead to infection of the seedpieces with decay organisms, and excoriation of the wound periderm formed before tubers are put into storage can lead to losses from dehydration, disease, and various defects.

Excoriation may also occur in response to an itch or other skin sensation or to remove a lesion on the skin (e.g., acne excoriée).
The behavior in psychogenic excoriation sometimes resembles obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in that it is repetitive, ritualistic and tension-reducing.
Studies examining the psychiatric comorbidity of patients with psychogenic excoriation have found depressive and anxiety disorders to be common (Arnold et al., 1998; Gupta et al., 1987; Simeon et al., 1997).

In non-bacterial intractable bladder troubles, patients suffer from pain when bladder is filled because nerve is usually denuded due to excoriation of vesical mucosa epithelium, and patients suffer from increased urinary frequency because of decreased bladder capacity caused by fibrillation of bladders.
In such cases, acetic acid concentration of the acetic acid solution used for excoriation of vesical mucosa is not limited to 5%, and retention time of the acetic acid solution in bladder is not limited to ten minutes.
That is, the larger the bladder dry weight or the smaller the intravesical amount of hydroxyproline of the aforementioned rabbit vesical mucosa trouble model after the bladder of the model is applied with a solution of various agents, the stronger the ability of preventing fibrillation of vesical proper muscle coat of the solution.

My attention was drawn to this anatomical configuration because in the course of the years I have been consulted by men who mostly after their first coition, showed an excoriation, a slight rhagade or even a slight laceration of the frenum behind the margin of the corona, or of the alae freni.
The excoriation is seen in cases of forced coition in older men with a rigid frenum; a young man with phimosis developed a slight laceration in a forced trial to cohabitate.
The occurrence of the phenomenon is mentioned in older textbooks of surgery and in textbooks of dermatology; in the most severe cases it may cause a serious bleeding and in rare cases a suture may be necessary.

Part of that has to do with the experience in the band (including bassist Herr, formerly of one of upstate New York's most destructive death metal bands, Violent Fury).

The APA session on this topic focused generally on self excoriation, including various permutations of scratching and/or picking, usually with the finger nails, but sometimes with instruments.
The point made at these presentations is that there is a very large differential diagnosis to consider here, both medically and psychologically, and therefore that very thorough evaluation needs to be done.
Cases were presented of patients whose excoriations were considered to be entirely psychological, missing serious underlying medical illnesses, and vice versa.

Peristomal skin excoriation is caused by skin barrier or pouch leakage, allergies, infection, radiation, skin stripping when too strong an adhesive is used, or when a skin barrier is removed in a rough manner.
The most important issue when dealing with peristomal skin excoriation is to determine the cause and correct it.

 DOMESTIC MEDICINE - Chapter Forty-nine
AS these complaints are, in a great measure, owing to want of cleanliness, the most effectual means of preventing them are, to wash the parts frequently with cold water, to change the linen often, and, in a word, to keep the child, in all respects, thoroughly clean.
When this is not sufficient, the excoriated parts may be sprinkled with absorbent or drying powders; as burnt hartshorn, tutty, chalk, crabs claws prepared, and the like.
When the parts afffected are very sore, and tend to a real ulceration, it will be proper to add a little sugar of lead to the powders; or to anoint the place with the camphorated ointment.
