The heads of the 14 departments, chosen by the president and approved by the Senate, form a council of advisers generally known as the president's "cabinet." In addition to departments, there are a number of staff organizations grouped into the Executive Office of the President.
Internationally, the department coordinates federal policy in the territories of the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, and the Northern Mariana Islands, and oversees funding for development in the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau.
