Executive system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is also referred to as executive function or the central executive and plays a central role in many psychological theories.
Theories of the executive system were largely driven by observations of patients who had suffered frontal lobe damage.
The executive system is thought to be heavily involved in handling novel situations outside the domain of some of our 'automatic' psychological processes that could be explained by the reproduction of learnt schemas or set behaviours.

Tests of executive function are relevant for quantifying the functional deficits and underlying real-life problems associated with prenatal alcohol exposure.
This study is unique in its analysis of the same battery of assessments of executive function in both a large low dose longitudinal study sample and a clinically diagnosed group.
The findings suggest that these executive function tests would be particularly useful in clinical evaluations of persons suspected of fetal alcohol damage because they would not simply reflect deficits in IQ or facial stigmata.

Executive functions are a complex set of skills, which include the ability to plan actions towards a goal, to use the information adaptively, to realize consequences of behavior and make judgments.
Executive function is also the ability to integrate new information and use it effectively to respond to change.
A breakdown in executive functioning affects goal directed behavior and the individual may not only have difficulty getting started on an activity, but once started may have difficulty changing or stopping the activity.

Barkley describes executive function as those "actions we perform to ourselves and direct at ourselves so as to accomplish self-control, goal-directed behavior, and the maximization of future outcomes." A number of times we have used the idea of ‘executive function’ in explanations of behavior.
However, [it is crucial to recognize that] most these functions are phenomena of [distributed] neural processing and without a unique location of their own, either in frontal cortex or elsewhere." (The quotes is from the book "The Prefrontal Cortex" by J.M. Fuster)
Inappropriate, or deficient communication between dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and areas where sensation and action are processed and organized is the basis of saying that diseases such as schizophrenia involve impaired executive functioning of the prefrontal cortex.

Autism, Opioid Peptides & Executive Function
This example is, perhaps, stretching the original description of “executive function” into an area not considered by those who originally proposed the ideas but the principle is entirely analogous.
Taken together these two functions of being primed for immediate movement (dopaminergic system) and being mentally appeared to fight (serotonergic system) are important for the preservation of the individual and normal physiological and behavioural responses to environmental stress.
The control of this switching system could, once again, be described as an “Executive Function” and, once again, could be the consequence of opioid activity within the CNS.

On the other hand, if the ACC doesn't function properly as it should, it can diminish a person's ability to recognize their own mistakes and correct them or at least acknowledge them.
An influential theory about ACC function has suggested that the brain is sensitive to the conflict that arises when tasks are too complex and subjects are being asked to do more than they can without making errors.

 PNPIC - Executive Function
Executive function has been associated with dissociable mental operations, such as planning, working memory, maintenance and shifting of mental set, and inhibition of prepotent responses.
These are considered to constitute a domain-general system that is different from basic functions of sensation, perception, memory, and language.
Deficits in executive control have been classically associated with acquired damage to the prefrontal cortex, but recent findings show that executive dysfunctions should not be assumed to reflect damage specifically to the frontal lobes, as it may arise from damage to interconnected cortical and subcortical brains structures or from more diffuse brain damage.

The problems with autism related to executive functioning have more to do with the root issue of the problems with episodic memory (also called emotional memory or autobiographical memory) and the autistic problem of limited motivations.
The part of the "executive functioning" you are speaking of here, (ie a static, step-by-step procedure) is not really what is considered a "core deficit" of autism actually.
The thing is that Executive Function IS a core deficit of autism, so anytime you are trying to help strengthen the executive function you ARE dealing with the autism itself.
