Ebony: Exhaling and inhaling: was the movie fair to black men and black women? - 'Waiting to Exhale' - Panel Discussion
Exhale's female characters push past harmful habits of self-pity and self-debasement to embrace liberating practices of self-examination and self-affirmation.
Through the dying art of conversation, Exhale's female characters confront the ugliness of their lives and name the hidden forces that drive them to seek solace in men's arms before they search for it in the mirror of self-reflection.
In this light, Exhale is more interested in highlighting the tortured condition of the female psyche, and how women can help one another regain their balance, than it is in pinpointing the wretched irresponsibility of some Black men.

Barnes & Noble.com - Waiting to Exhale -- Forest Whitaker - DVD - Wide Screen
Fastidiously adapted from Terry McMillan's bestselling, award-winning novel, Waiting to Exhale is the quintessential African-American "chick flick." It revolves around four reasonably well-to-do southwestern suburbanites (Whitney Houston, Angela Bassett, Loretta Devine, and Lela Rochon) afflicted with the same malady: an inexplicable inability to attract male partners willing to commit to long-term relationships.
Exhale interweaves the stories of its quartet of protagonists as they unfold over a year's time.
Pop diva Houston, not surprisingly, plays the film's most glamorous character, but her thesping is easily surpassed by that of Devine, whose earthy charm provides a welcome counterpoint to Whitney's theatricality.

 Exhale
I breath the universe in, millions of thousands of hundred of particals desentigrating to fill my lungs...and then I exhale, and the particals go back to normals, to become planets and suns and clouds...only to be disrupted again as I inhale.
Disrupt those so-called happy lives for a just a moment-a nano-second they will never miss, as their atoms are scrambled and sucked into my lungs.
Absorb the Bill Gateses and the telemarketers and the soccer moms...let their hidden discontent fill me...then exhale, and become myself again.

Waiting to Exhale by Terry McMillan
Waiting to Exhale is a masterful novel from a writer who has developed a special bond with her audience.
Set in Phoenix, Arizona, it's a wise, funny, and resonant story about the friendship between four very different women who have one thing in common: they have not fared well with the men in their lives.
Told from each of these characters' diverse points of view, Waiting to Exhale is about their desire to find good men, exciting men; men who could help them lose the strange feeling that they've been holding their breath for as long as they can remember; men who could make them exhale.

Amazon.com: Video: Waiting to Exhale (1995)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-18)
Depending on who you are, Terry McMillan's 1992 novel "Waiting to Exhale" is either a blessing or a dreaded curse.
But in other circles, mostly male, "Waiting to Exhale" was ripped to shreds as a spiteful and ungrounded damnation of Black men as philanderers, deadbeats, and no-good-dooers.
That aside, it's not often that a movie successfully adapts a novel as well as this one, and "Waiting to Exhale," warts and all, merits a B in my school of cinema.

MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia: Pulmonary function tests
Pulmonary function tests are a broad range of tests that are usually done in a health care provider's office or a specialized facility.
They measure how well the lungs take in and exhale air and how efficiently they transfer oxygen into the blood.
The information gathered during this test is useful in diagnosing certain types of lung disorders, but is most useful when assessing for obstructive lung diseases (especially asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, COPD).
