1886 Picturesque Atlas of Australasia - History of Queensland Part 11 - Government & Crisis
Sir George Bowen arrived in Brisbane on board the war corvette "Cordelia" on December 10th, 1859, and on landing he formally proclaimed the new colony of Queensland amidst the acclamations of the exultant population, who were buoyant with the most sanguine hopes of a progress which should thenceforth surpass all their previous experience.
Brisbane influence proved sufficiently potent to carry, as some sort of compensation, a measure for improving the access to that town, and the river bar and flats were dredged with the view of cutting a deep-water channel.
Sugar culture was encouraged by liberal arrangements for the acquisition of plantations on the alluvial lands along the coastal rivers and creeks; and the growth of cotton was effectually stimulated by liberal bounties on the export of the staple.

THE IN-LINE ACCELERATING MOVING WALKWAY -- September 1998
The in-line accelerating moving walkway systems arose from an attempt the author made when a principal of an urban planning consultancy (specialising in urban transport) to devise an accelerating system based on a cheaper and simpler approach than used previously.
Note that in the railway station installation, after two years of rough use, even the short belts had suffered no appreciable wear, and no deterioration of the splices were evident.
The in-line accelerating moving walkway responds to this potential problem by constantly monitoring the speed of all belts and handrails; if they run more than a nominated percentage fast or slow, the system comes to a controlled stop.

 Tram Summary
Siemens' line, for example, provided power through a live rail and a return rail, like a model train setup, limiting the voltage that could be used, and providing unwanted excitement to people and animals crossing the tracks.
While this line proved quite versatile as one of the earliest fully functional electric streetcar installations, it still required horse-drawn support while climbing the Niagara Escarpment and for two months of the winter when hydroelectricity was not available.
This line recently underwent an expansion to the Fisherman's Wharf area and a second line along the Embarcadero to the east is in the planning stages.
