Exhorder are back - Metal Review Community
So according to Exhorders Myspace, they have officially reunited, with all of the original members, and are in the process of writing new material.
Exhorder, at it's best, was a middle tier 90's thrash band, Pantera was top of the heap.
No matter how good Exhorder is (again, I have no beef against them since I own their two albums and will buy whatever they record now) the truth is that there is no possible debate here.

Exhorder - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Exhorder was a groove metal band formed in New Orleans, USA during the late 1980s.
Some fans of Exhorder would even accuse Pantera of robbing the groove style from Exhorder and stealing their fame causing many parodies of Pantera to pop up through out the internet and the groove-metal scene, which is pure bullshit, since all these bands have obviously different styles.
Exhorder released two albums in the early 1990s, debuting with Slaughter In Vatican and making a follow-up with The Law.

Exhorder's music is more complex than most in the style, but still manages to groove (a distant cousin to COC when Pepper joined, circa "Albatross").
Kyle Thomas, Exhorder's lead singer, obviously influenced or was influenced by Pantera's Phillip Anselmo, as they have very similar vocalistic stylings.
Both Pantera and Exhorder come from the same Texas metal scene at the same time (both released their first albums in 1990 and 1992--I'm not counting Pantera's pre-"Cowboys..." albums because they obviously had a different musical vision before "Cowboys..." than after).

By now, Exhorder virgins are probably wondering "but what the hell makes it so good?" To be honest, it's hard to tell exactly, but a combination of factors adds up to a final product far greater than the sum of its parts.
While Exhorder were overlooked during their career, their importance has since been recognised.

It has been claimed that Exhorder more or less invented the sort of angry, 90's post-thrash metal often attributed to Pantera.
It's not really clear who was first (and ultimately it may not matter much), but the resemblance between The Law and Pantera's Cowboys From Hell is clear, with stripped-down rhythm guitars, heavy double-bass drumming, and angry vocals complimenting the basic American thrash style of the late 80's.
As late as 2002 Thomas indicated a desire to put out a new Exhorder album, but that doesn't appear to be happening at this time, as he is now devoting time to his new band, Pitts vs Preps.

Exhorder started out as a furious thrash metal band and as the forefathers of the New Orleans scene in 1985.
The band was first heard of via the Get Rude demo of 1986 where the guitarists were David Main and Ceravolo.
Simultaneously the band did not tour with Deicide because Glen Benton and the boys were asking for too much money, according to Exhorder.

I never quite understood exactly what it was that Exhorder brought to the thrash table back in the day, except maybe an inspiration for Phil Anselmo on who he should style his vocals after.
What Exhorder fails to do is really put much emphasis on making their songs stand out from one another.
Maybe for some rabid thrash fan (and in 1989, that's precisely what I was) there is a need to chase after Exhorder but I will quite happily chase better bands from the era.

After their second successful album "The Law" EXHORDER unfortunately split up and still or maybe because of this "Slaughter In The Vatican" (just like "The Law") has grown into a cult-album and a much sought-after rarity.
Musically EXHORDER do no compromises on this album, pure Thrash Metal, rough, brutal, aggressive, this is EXHORDER.
The musical grenades bear titles like "Death In Vain" (an opener that mercilessly guts you), "Homicide", "Exhorder" or "The Tragic Period", which is a lead-poisoning turned sound.

The name Exhorder strikes awe and intimidation into the hearts of true metal hordes everywhere.
Formed in the mid-to-late ‘80s, Exhorder are credited with starting the “southern trendkill” style of thash-hardcore-sludge insanity eventually carried on by the likes of Crowbar, Eyehategod, Soilent Green, Down, and – of course – Pantera.
Whatever the case, Exhorder soon disappeared after The Law’s release, despite rumors of a third album being demoed.

The Law is still a crushing Exhorder release but unarguably the music has lost a lot of its inventive energy here.
Although the debut of Exodus deservedly got a permanent position in the hall of thrash fame due to its classic status only, some of this album has not aged as gracefully as some other releases of the time.

Kyle Thomas was the man behind Exhorder, an early-90's band that has been widely acclaimed as the originator of the modern Pantera sound.
With his later band Floodgate, Thomas opted for a different sound, as Penalty featured a modern Sabbath sound with a slight Southern flavor, similar to fellow southerners such as Corrosion Of Conformity or Down.
Though a shade short on songwriting variety, the album was a pretty good first effort, but the band never recorded again.
