A self-titled, punk-orientated album later that same year sold few copies but introduced Numan's fascination with dystopia (State in which the condition of life is extremely bad as from deprivation or oppression or terror) n science fiction (Literary fantasy involving the imagined impact of science on society) and, more importantly, synthesisers.
Numan re-evaluated his career and went in a harsher, more industrial (additional info and facts about industrial) direction with his songwriting on the album Sacrifice; for the first time, he played almost all the instruments himself.
Numan's next two albums Exile (1997 (additional info and facts about 1997)) and Pure (2000 (additional info and facts about 2000)) restored Numan's critical reputation; Numan even toured the U.S. in support of Exile, his first stateside concerts since the early 1980s.

 Gary Numan
Gary Webb, is a British singer, songwriter and electropop pioneer.
Numan wore heavy make-up and was clearly inspired - self-admittedly so - by David Bowie, Marc Bolan and contemporary electronic acts such as Ultravox and The Human League, both in their pre-fame incarnations.
Numan is also known for his love of flying, and has owned several aircraft, one of which he famously crashed (only according to the press) in 1981 while attempting a round-the-world jaunt.

Gary Numan's "Living Ornaments" To See Release
Diehard Gary Numan fans have always demanded a complete show from the "Teletour" of 1980, the "machine-music" period when Numan was at the peak of his commercial success.
Within weeks, Gary Numan was posing on Top Of The Pops in harsh white light, bringing a touch of showbiz camp to the clipped, motoric repetitiveness of the song.
Gary Numan's story is of an imperfect, and at times improbable, Pop star who has fulfilled an entertainer's primary role of never being boring.

 Interview: Gary Numan - 5/16/98
Gary: On this tour I have a drummer, Richard Besley, two keyboard players, one of which plays a bit of bass and the other who plays some guitar.
Gary: After writing "Sacrifice" I received a number of complaints about the religious imagery that I had started to use on that album.
The only thing I am slightly unhappy about is that the CD was marketed as a Gary Numan album, when in fact it has very little to do with me. The music is entirely written by other bands, even if they are cover songs.

gary numan: white boy and hero
Even Numan himself would have to acknowledge that his fans around the world are not altogether different from the typical person on the street who, although he may be a self-fulfilled agnostic or proclaimed atheist rather than a devout religious enthusiast, still has a tendency to steer clear of such aggressive unorthodox activism.
Numan, however, is hoping for a more cognizant, intelligent reaction from those who may feel threatened or repulsed by the concepts presented on the new album.
Though to those who remember Numan simply as the voice behind the international new wave hit "Cars", the artist's outspokenness and dabbling as a writer may come as a surprise, the truth is that Numan's nature led to him being dubbed a renegade and recluse early on in his career.

Gary Numan's recent revival is proving to be something of a mixed blessing.
Numan's credibility was resurrected as he reinvented himself, shedding the accumulated baggage of the previous ten years.
Also, the album's strong enough to have obtained Gary his first non-compilation US release since the late 80s, which is nothing to be sneezed at.

Gary's unique style of synthesized music catapulted his career to new heights with hits such as "Cars" and "Are Friends Electric" and reshaped the music industry.
Exile was released in the UK in '97 and in America in February this year.
From the beginning, I knew the album was going to be about one thing, a horror story that looked at God and our possible misinterpretations of the Bible, and so the atmosphere in many ways fed itself." This is evident in songs such as "Dead Heaven," "The Angel Wars" and "Dark" to name a few.

While the release of Exile last year marked a major upturn in Gary Numan's musical fortunes, it's nice to see that one of the more distinctive features of his Numa-era output has survived.
Exile album stretched out to eight minutes by means of extended intros and bridges, you're also going to be disappointed.
Although the album is a full 50% longer, the stretched versions of the tracks don't drag - Numan seems to have perfected the art of knowing just how much extra can be squeezed from a bridge before it starts becoming repetitive.

Dark subject matter is nothing new to the Numan camp, but Exile Extended is easily one of his darkest.
Numan continues to update his sound to the electro-rock vein, and by offering this extended version, he gives the music and his vocals more room to breathe.

In early 1979, the UK success of Gary Numan's second album Replicas and the single "Are 'Friends' Electric?" made the charts safe for a generation of synth-pop artists including the Human League, Depeche Mode, and Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark.
Nowadays, Gary Numan's influence is perhaps as far-reaching as that of the performers who initially inspired his own work.

I have eveything Numan has ever done (yet, unfortunately, I forced myself to toss that 80's period when he did the stuff with the saxaphone and female vocals---Human League made a similar mistake on one album as well.) This album is the stuff that all similar music before AND after should judge themselves by.
Gary does nice things with his vocal melodies, but you have to sit back and actually listen to the disc rather than immediately popping your X and hopping into the convertible for a drive with all your Hot Topic pals.
Numan at times uses a strong, loud and agressive back drop to put forward his ideas ("Dominion Day", "The Angel Wars") whilst at other times a quieter, sneering, almost nasty hush like quality ("Exile", "Prophesy") is used to convey his misgivings towards 'blind faith'.

Numan's record sales exceed a healthy 15 million units, whilst 1979's The Touring Principle -- filmed during his first sell-out UK tour -- was the first commercially available full-length music video, pipping Blondie to the post by a matter of weeks.
Put simply, Gary was almost alone in seeing the opportunity for a 'star' of synthesizer-based music -- a smart move, as evidenced by the string of hits to follow, with over 35 chart singles and more than 20 chart albums to date.
Gary is hopeful that this newfound technology will help alleviate his prevailing state of isolation and expand his present fan base beyond the boundaries of the UK.

I expect this album to get a lot of playtime in my house--and not just when the MP3 player is on "random." As for the song that drew me here, the mix of "Are 'Friends' Electric" by Oakenfeld collaborator Andy Gray, I'm sorry to say that it obscures everything I liked about the original song.
After initially reading the track listing, I assumed that this album was just a greatest hits album, seeing as it has his greatest hits on it, Dark, Cars, Are Friend Electric, oh the list goes on, everything on this CD in its original form is truly amazing.
