Observer Sticky Fingers & Exile on Main S, The Rolling Stones
Fans and critics alike have drooled for decades over Let It Bleed and Exile on Main St, but Fingers is surely the Rolling Stones's greatest single long-player.
A movable feast of stoned cronies, Exile is rough and ready, torn and frayed, a grab-bag of Americana that's equal parts Gram Parsons ('Sweet Virginia'), gumbo swamp-blues (Slim Harpo's 'Shake Your Hips'), and Laurel Canyon gospel ('Let It Loose', 'Shine a Light').
All rock records should be made in the dank basements of old Nazi strongholds on the Côte d'Azur, with reliable heroin connections in Marseille and Gram Parsons hovering in the panelled hallways.

Dominique Tarlé's photographic documentary of the recording of Exile On Main Street (as featured in MOJO 98) is a thing of ruined beauty - like the stills from a lost movie or a fantastical photo-album glimpsed in a brief opium dream of out-of-grasp rock stardom.
Tarlé's intimate shots - taken during the Stones' 1971 stay in the south of France to record Exile on Main St. - capture Keith, Mick, and various hangers-on in the studio and in repose; coupled with an insightful text, it's a rare glimpse at the creative process.'

 Daily Vault - April 7, 2005
Regarded as one of the best double-albums of all time and a cornerstone of rock, the only major debate surrounding the Rolling Stones' Exile on Main St. is whether or not it's their best recording.
Many critics have taken turns switching Exile On Main St. with Let It Bleed and more recently, Aftermath as the Rolling Stones' finest hour (the same thing happens with the Beatles -- in the 1980s, most critics thought Sgt.
Strung out, no doubt suffering from periods of disillusion and depression, the Rolling Stones entered Keith Richards's moldy mansion and had enough of a solid head on their shoulders to come out with a double-album of blues, RandB and rock fusion that sounded like nothing they had recorded before.
